I know this question has been asked before, but those threads are now a few years old.
I'm about to start my nursing program in August and I'm in the process of buying my supplies. We are instructed to have a watch that has a second hand, but that is the only requirement for the watch. I have read various post about the fact that wrist watches can harbor a lot of bacteria. Not to mention, considering the amount of times I will have to wash my hands, it seems as though wrist watches would be uncomfortable from the moisture.
That said, I really like the idea of a lapel watch, but I've never used one before, and I'm not sure how functional they are. Will a lapel watch serve me just fine, or am I better off with a wrist watch?
Which style of watch do you all recommend?

This is the watch that I have. I love the holes in the band because I hate the feeling of my wrist still being wet after I wash my hands. I got it for around $20. I have gotten some compliments on it since it is a little unconventional. I usually spray it with some Lysol at least once a week and let it dry. I like to save my nicer watches for when I am off duty. I won't be heartbroken or just broke if I break or lose this one.
I chose a Timex watch with a white face, real numbers, a sweeping second hand, and it is water resistant. However, the band is cloth - like the straps of a backpack. I guess I was thinking that it would not hurt it to get wet, but will this be bad for infection control? Should I go for a metal or plastic band? All of the ones I saw with plastic bands were such LARGE watches, and I have small wrists...
Also - the plastichic ones on the website were digital, and we were told we needed a sweeping second hand.

i used to be a firm believer in $25-$30 walmart timex watches but i was always replacing the bands and batteries. in 2004 my brother bought me a lumi nox series 3000 for my tour in iraqi. it has survived katrina, a combat tour with the 155th regimental combat team, nursing and many a wild weekend with the guys. best watch ive owned by far.
