Which type of blood product is compatible with all blood types?

blood type O is the universal donor. are you asking as far as PRBC's, FFP, platelets..... ?

Specializes in CVICU.

O negative blood can be given to any person. However, both platelets and FFP with different types can be given to anyone because they are filtered to remove the RBCs.

I don't wan't to sound mean but are you in nursing school?? You should have taken A&P prior to the nursing program so refer back to your book's. No matter who answers your question you cant go to your nursing intructor and say: "well, this type of blood is compatible with all blood types because Spoiled627 told me so" lol. You can always Google

Anywho, Blood type AB can donate blood to A B only but can receive from A, B, or O . Blood type O can donate to AB, A, B or O but can only receive from O. Hope this helps.

Maybe you should read a poster's profile before jumping to conclusions. The OP is an RN with 10 years experience. She just happens to like to ask questions on allnurses. Not sure *why*, but none of my business.

Like I said "I didn't want to sound mean!" and I did look at her profile and I didn't see any reference to this "OP" you mentioned. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I assume everyone can answer how they please. It is an open discussion, right??

OP=original poster

If you read her previous posts you'll see she's an RN of 10 years. And no, everyone can't answer how they please...not if it's insulting or mean, and any post you have to preface with "I don't want to sound mean" more than likely IS. Read the site TOS.

Off Topic: Yeah what's up with that? I have been running across a lot of mean posters lately. When people ask a question they jump down their throats and act like they don't deserve to be in NS or should have their license revoked for not knowing something.

Dang, can't we all just get along?

Anyway back to the topic...My textbook says that FFP needs to be ABO compatible but one poster says they don't. So do they or don't they have to be ABO compatible?

Exactly why I said, we can't rely on what people say!!!!. Seriously, I don't know what TRUERN's problem is but I've been a nursing student, I know what it feels like to not know the answer to a question.

We had a take home test once, and I looked up one of the answers online and guess what: I got it wrong!!!!

All I'm saying is: yes get info from our post but always back it up with a source!!!

My "problem" is your uninformed mean post to the OP, but it wasn't a problem until you made it one.

Silly me, I became an RN without being a nursing student ...why would my opinion count?

My point is that the OP was merely asking a question. Not asking for answers to homework since she's long been out of NS.

I was taught that you have to give type specific or type compatible FFP. There may be newer methods but the website I use here says the same:

As far as the OP I thought the question was about blood administration. Ie which blood products can be given with all other blood products. I know that in large volume resuscitation anesthesia mixes all the blood products in the level one and gives them all at once. On the other hand I have no idea if you could give FFP and PRBCs through the same IV tubing.
