Which Maricopa CC has shortest wait list?

Published

Hello fellow Nursing students,

I took the HESI entrance today at SCC.

Whew! It seemed like I was sitting at that computer forever!

I then walked directly across the way to submit my application.

SUCCESS!

I was date and time stamped and everything...

She then told me the wait list at SCC is approximately 2 years :crying2:

Does anyone know if the other Maricopa colleges have a shorter waiting list???

thanks for the information!

Crystal-How cool that you come from a whole line of women nurses, that is pretty awesome :)! My mom was a dental hygienist, so healthcare runs in the family for me too. I swear the wait goes fast. I am SOO enjoying the calm before the storm right now. Ihear so many horror stories of how hard it is!!

Dont' be too discouraged about the banner thing. Remember, it was only going to be for about $4000 and you have to work for them for 3 years. That is a long time for such a little amt of $$. Yes, it would've been nice to have the job at graduation, BUT that was never a guarantee.

One bright note in waiting right now is it gives the market time to correct itself. I am hoping that when I graduate in 2 yrs, the market will at least be on the upswing and hospitals will once again be hiring new grads. I am sure there is a nursing shortage, but I am guessing its for experienced nurses?!

In the meantime, while youwait, have you thought of taking terminology or patho, to keep up your skills? I haven't done any of that, just been enoying my freedom and kiddos before the real work begins :)!

Since I will have about a year or so, I actuall plan on taking both of them. Maybe terminology next semester and Patho during the summer before I enter. I just had my third son 4 months ago, so like you said right now just trying to spend as many precious moments as I can before it gets real crazy:D

You're one tough mama! I can't imagine going back to school with my little ones still at home. That's why the wait hasn't bothered me. My baby just started Kindergarten, so now I have my days freed up, I am ready to start. It would have been harder for me if one or both of my boys were home!!

Hi Inspired,

Would you share with us what the 9 courses are? I am so excited that they are now offering a 2nd degree BSN. I also have my bachelor's and was going to go the long route with the community college ADN then get the BSN thru the pathway program. I'd much rather do it this way!

Thanks in advance!

The 9 courses are:

BIO 201, 202, and 205 (all with lecture and labs)

CHM 130 (lecture and lab)

CDE 232 (or at a community college, PSY 240)

HCR 220

HCR 240

PSY 101

I am really excited as well! I hope they can add another acceptance date, because as of now it is only once a year…But it is really exciting to find another option!

This BSN program at ASU sounds really good. I never took statistics though. Why would it be required? I didn't know that you could work and that the employer like a hospital will pay for classes to get your BSN. Is that right?

FYI, I'm taking HCR240 right now at Chandler Gilbert CC--Pecos campus. It is such an excellent and outstanding class and perfect to take during the wait! It's very fast moving, but boy, the professor is so so so good! If you're debating on taking it online v. a real class, take the class, and take it at CGCC-Pecos. It's also a pre req for a BSN. I had heard from an MCC nursing instructor that by taking it will prepare you so much better for RN school. It's all good. One cool thing in her class is each of us gets assigned 4 diagnoses over the semester to create a SOAP note for the class, so we're already practicing being nurses, sort of, without being a nurse yet.

Is the wait now really 3 years? My date/time stamp is June of 09 and I'm holding my breath that I get in this spring. When I got my stamp I was told it'd be 3 or 4 semesters. I've waited now 3 semesters. I believe I read on the maricopa site that they were up to Feb 09 at 8:04minutes.

Also, does Catholic Healthcare West have a similar Banner program? I heard that but I can't find any information about it.

I was told 2.5 years on the wait, but I would not be surprised if it turned out to be a little longer or even shorter.

Some employers offer tuition reimbursment as one of their benefits. Not all companies offer that, and often, you have to fit certain criteria (like work there a number of years or be full time staff).

I was about to take HCR240 on line. I might have to consider the on-campus class. Thanks for the feedback on that!

Aren't the BSN programs at ASU and NAU highly competetive? Their website says nobody with less than a 3.8 GPA will get in and that space is very limited. I don't think it's a quicker or easier option than waiting for the Associates through a community college, because that is a true wait list and everyone who is accepted is guaranteed a space. But there's no reason not to complete all the coursework you can towards a BSN later, because several of those classes are offered at community college. Then it takes only 1 year more to complete the BSN, after you have your RN from Maricopa (according to the advisors at MCC nursing division).

The BSN programs are highly competitive, but since the 2nd degree BSN program at ASU is barely off the ground, it is not well known and not at all competitive. It will probably become more competitive as time goes by, and as more people learn of it. I would go that direction if it weren't so expensive and if I didn't need 5 classes just to qualify! I am, however, still thinking about taking these classes, because you just never know. The requirements for the RN to BSN are a little different.

Wow guys thank you SO much for this info! I will be graduating from ASU in December with my BS in Sociology because I was also waiting for nursing school. I had no idea this existed! Luckily I think I've taken every class except HCR 240, funny thing is I actually needed one more class this semester to be eligible for financial aid so I took CDE 232 for fun - guess sometimes things happen for a reason!

Ya it is great information right! I emailed the lady who is officially in charge of the program, but unfortunately they have some issues. She sent me a letter saying they are reviewing this program as well as ASU's traditional program (what changes, I don't know…). But the changes will be finalized by November, and to check back at their website then or make an appointment with a counselor to figure out how the new changes will affect you. I am not sure what changes they are thinking about making, but hopefully everything will get finalized soon! And nothing too big has been added to this new program….

The fastest way to bypass the forever wait list is to go to Gateways LPN program. Its only a semester wait list tops. Sometimes you dont even have to wait. And if you have all of your prereqs done you can go right into block three as soon as you are done.
