Which hospitals claim to be on a hiring freeze?

U.S.A. Texas

Please post if you have heard of any hospitals that are on a hiring freeze and how you obtained this information. There is a lot of buzz going on around my school among the May 09 grads afraid they won't get a job and hearing that so and so isn't hiring. Also, I suspect that some hospitals may say they have a hiring freeze but this does not apply to new graduate internship spots. Please share what you know!

We times are good, I have been offered a job at one interview. When times are bad places will do telephone interviews and make you come back several times before you get a position.

Now we the economy bad, places will interview numerous candidates and it can take forever before you start a position.

Just because a job is posted, sometimes they don't fill them for months and months.

Redranger, has you wife had a job offer in a new grad program ?

As a nurse I have never not found a job. In hard times employers will make you work hard and in unsafe conditions and you have to take it.

Places that are offering overtime and often places that don't want to commit to bringing a fulltime benefited employee. And $30 for a Specialist is below market value and Specialist and Management are do not get OT.

There is more than a hiring freeze going on in Houston. The nursing shortage does exist ,but people should be more detailed. There is a shortage of experienced nurses. I went to a job fair hosted by nurse week a couple weeks ago and most of the hospitals there were not hiring new grads. MD Anderson said they were on a hiring freeze for new grads.Womens Hospital is also on a hiring freeze. TCH is on a hiring freeze.Kindred Hospital TMC does not have a new grad program. HCA hospitals and Tenet Hospitals are the last hospitals still hiring. The HCA hospitals told me at the job fair that even though they are hiring, they can only hire a few grad nurses. West Houston is about to start interviewing and have even requested that applicants write a 350 word essay about "why there are in the field of nursing and why they chose West Houston.I know a lot of December grads who still have not found jobs. Now the May grads are feeling the squeeze also. I asked one nurse recruiter from Tenet about how come they were accepting less new grads and she said "New grad nurses cost about $3,000 each to train." So I am not surprised that hospitals are hiring less new grads with this economy. Even if the hospital is not losing money ,they are probably tried to scale back costs. My advice would be to steer away from the Houston TMC and start applying to the cities surrounding Houston.:crying2:

Another good reason to stay away from Houston

I have been down there a couple times for work, As a rule I try to pass on work in that area........

My wife started job searching a 3 weeks ago.

She just rec'd her LPR card to work in USA, She Graduated from a Philippines Nursing school last year, and just passed NCLEX.

She has had 3 Interviews and 2 phone interviews in the D/FW MetroMess so far.

I look at Hospitals and look at all the job openings they have in D/FW MetroMess, Jobs are there for the pickings.

My wifes Clinical Intructor came to USA in August last year and is working in West Texas Hospital and she started at $30 per hour and got a $15K signing bonus. She told me she works about 20 hours overtime per week due to the lack of Nurses

Bottom Line, the jobs are here in the areas I mentioned, you just got to be hungry and be able to land them..

So where is your wife working? How many job offers did she get?

Actually as a new grad it costs more like $30,000 each to fully train them. The price goes up when it's a specialized field.

I recently moved to the DFW and had no problems finding a job but I have 5+yrs experience so that seems like that makes a huge difference.

wow! This really sucks! I graduate year from now and I'm hoping things get better in houston! especially with a few new hospitals being build and expected to open in 2010! TCH is opening their west campus (I-10 & Baker cypress) by spring 2010 & TCH is opening their new Maternity building in the TMC (but that's not until 2011)there's another hospital being build right next to it as well (west campus one). SO I'm hoping that there will be more job openings this time next year! But I wouldn't mind working somewhere outside the TMC. I know a new grad told me about a year ago that it's tough being a new grad and finding a job, b/c if it's slow they send YOU home and not the experienced nurse. So she said that she had alot of PRN jobs and so she keep herself busy with those jobs just to get the experience under her belt the first year or so! So, Maybe MANY PRN jobs can help you get your foot in?

Your best bet would to get a patient care tech job at one of the hospitals that tend to hire new grads. If, by the time you graduate, there are still slim pickings, you would be in a prime position to land the GN job because you are already established within the hospital.

Next year's market will likely be far superior to this year's. Not only will the economy be better, many current hospital construction projects are finishing in late 2009 - early 2010 and will be hurting for staff.
