I have heard eastern Oregon has a crisis of a shortage, due to the far-flung rural location. I heard some astounding numbers of nurses that are needed. Also, in here, Detroit sounds ripe- if you can dig that climate.
What I find more disturbing is that I have heard of a major hospital hiring new grads at $18/hr here in the Phoenix area (unconfirmed).
I finally accepted a job here in the Phoenix area for $25.50/hr. For a new grad, I think that's pretty good.
$21 for an RN in an ER? The last time I made that little money as an LPN was the year 2000. Things are falling backwards at an alarming rate- there's no way that pay would allow the average person to repay the loans to go to school. Sad.
I'm from Mesa, LPN. Last time I worked I made $26.50 in LTC, a hellhole. I see now a SNF in East Mesa is firing all LPNs (when that gets out the rest will follow suit, especially with the new AHCCCS cuts Oct. 1), hiring new RNs for about $19. Ten years ago new hospital RNs in Phoenix made over $30.
And I remember gas being $0.50/gal and cigs being $0.95.
It's a sign of the times - supply and demand. If I were single and without a family, I would have jumped at the chance to work in the ER even in North Dakota. Which is why I am so thankful I was offered this job. Compared to $19/hr (and I think I know people that got jobs in that major hospital), I'm ecstatic.
I'm also very happy I don't have to deal with those &^%$% recruiters anymore.
I don't know if you said, but where are you now and what are you looking for?

You can make far more in any of the millions of hellhole SNFs in FL, if you can stand the abuse, fraud, drug addicted nurses (in Clearwater heroin is the nurses' drug of choice, and the hospital downtown CLWTR stated in an article they believed that 10% of their staff RNs were heroin addicts). But I suspect you wouldn't last long.

Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhh no thanks.
Question, and I am just curious. What type of alternative lifestyle are you looking at or thinking about?
Small sustainable self reliant farm, commune. Farms are the new wave of the future, and people want local organic food. It's easy to grow. Chickens too. Maybe work a shift or two a month for money. I've been 'off the grid' for several years, myself.
Word. That's actually really cool.
I wish you much success!

I think you got it right. If I could just get the student loan monkeys off my back and get my husband through school...it just might be doable.
