I know we're not supposed to advertise here and I'm not but where do good MDS Coordinators live? Surely not around here....we put an ad on Career Builders and didn't get one response. Unlike the ad I put on Craig's List for a medical records person.

I was a RNAC, and was trying to hire one when I took over as DON a few months back. We got a few applicants when we advertised. I found most applicants in my area had no experience and didn't even know what the MDS was. Some didn't even know how to careplan. They just applied because they liked the hours- you know M-F dayshift.
I am from southern PA.

i think they are "home grown".......
I wanted to grow my own but corporate told me it would take too long to train her and didn't I know 3.0 was coming in October? Yes, duh, I know about 3.0 but since NO ONE has used 3.0 yet what would be the big deal to train her. I have the awful feeling that all the MDS stuff is going to be piled on top on my desk and they will expect me to do it.
penny wise and pound foolish.
I finally ended up growing my own. My Restorative Nurse who is a LPN is detailed oriented, organized, and anal- all the qualities needed to be a good MDS Nurse. I sign off when the MDS is complete, but since I really trust this nurse- I have no issues using a LPN. Some times a LPN is better then a RN.
I hope that they dont dump all of that on your desk. I am starting to buckle down and get all the players on board for the transition. Yuck! Not fun....

Nascar Nurse,
Any chance you live in or near Richmond, VA? We have RIR here and my company is in need of MDS nurses.

I would be happy to be home grown. Every time I look at an ad for MDS, they demand experience, so I don't bother. But I still maintain interest in the position. I'll bet there are others out there who would like to be trained on the job.

I think you did not get any response to your ad because of your timing. MDS nurses are stressed out about 3.0. I am thinking about changing jobs, but I am definitely waiting until after October. Some of the MDS nurses I know are thinking about changing back to working as supervisors or managers or retiring.
Besides the MDS 3.0 coming out, the RUGs are changing, our software can't handle 3.0 so we are getting a new program, constant meetings, seminars and plus no OT because of the census. I am running as fast as I can, I am scrambling to get my MDS's done, never mind go on a job hunt and interviews.
I started out "home grown" 10 years ago. It's going to be all new for everyone in MDS/PPS world in October. Your company would be wise to let you pick someone in your building to train, who loves paperwork and change!
