Where are all the happy nurses?

Published

So I was wondering where in America are the happy nurses? If you are happy with your work environment, please share with us what hospital system you work for and what state. And tell us what you love and hate about your hospital.:D

I'll get us started by saying, I visited Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. The weather is terrible, but the hospital itself is well organized. 0.7 is considered full time and any extra shifts are overtime pay. There's computer charting outside the room, a locker room for you to shower after work, and they wash your scrubs for you. It is unionized though(not sure if that's a good or bad thing)

I'm happy I don't work in a hospital...or even in the USA for that matter...

Happiness comes from within. No job is perfect, however, if the job is so bad that you are miserable, it's your job to find a new one.

I think you have to know yourself and what you can live with. I have a long commute that would be a deal breaker for a lot of people. It doesn't bother me at all and it leads to a low stress nursing job I love.

It took a lot of years for me to figure out what I could live with and what I couldn't. That is different for each person. I worked for 5 years at a job which overtly catered to pregnant and new parent employees. Legal or not, they got first dibs on patient assignments, vacations and holidays. The rest of us fought for what was left over. I couldn't change it so I left. I know people who stayed and it is still that way, 15 years later! I'd have been miserable. Now I'm happy. You have to do what you need to do to find the right fit.

I started out working on surgical and pediatrics floor taking inpatients loved that loved the people I worked with. I'm now in the ER and that's a totally different love. The people I work with are great they are great teachers and they want you to succeed. They like to have fun on the rare occassion that you get to sit down. The pay and management could be better but that's life and you have to find ways to deal with it. Working with a good bunch of nurses and docs makes up for what is lacking.

On the whole I too am happy tho I work in a long term care setting not a hospital. We are considered the best of the best here in Oklahoma. When I said I needed help it was done; my administration asks my opinion and then listens. Not perfect and I go home grumbling at times but I've seen worse and this ain't it.

Love my job in SICU. Good staff, good pay, and we self schedule.

I figure if I'm still smiling when I walk in the door, it must be pretty good........
