When someone mocks you for being a nurse

Published

I just had a really ****** night where I was mocked for going to school to be a nurse. I can't explain how frustrated and ******* ****** off I get when people mock me for my decision to be a nurse and make a positive difference in people's lives. I feel like so many people think nurses just put band aides on people's fingers. I hate this and just needed somewhere to vent, people are idiots, if there weren't nurses the healthcare system would collapse faster than a ******* popped balloon.

People are ridiculous. There are so many great reasons to be a nurse, and some folks just don't get it. All kinds of scheduling and specialties to get into, you're not generally stuck behind a desk all day, there's always something new to do and learn, you get to take pride in making someone more comfortable and healthy every day, and the best part? You get to wear scrubs, NOT pantyhose, to work every day! :woot:

It's not for everybody, but honestly, no one would walk up to, say, a human resources specialist or an engineer or something and straight-up insult their career choice. I just pity the people who didn't develop enough manners or common sense to be polite to the nurses who may well end up taking care of them someday.

ETA: Haha, not sure how this happened, but I hadn't realized I had entered the male nursing student board. So, I guess you probably wouldn't have run the risk of wearing pantyhose to work anyway. :roflmao: Still, though, I admire anybody who gets into this line of work, and so do a lot of other people! Just let the foolish ones roll off.

please dont let that bother you in the least. I would suspect a little bit of jealousy perhaps on those who "mock" the profession. [h=1]Gallup: Nurses again deemed 'most trusted' profession[/h]

There honestly needs to be more make nurses ! And most women find it fantastically attractive

Usually I leave semi long posts, but this one doesn't need one. I'll give you a short, simple piece of advice...****'em. Unless they want to pay your bills or do their choice of a "Mans" job and give you the check, It's none of their business what you decide to do with your life.

And if what I said isn't enough, then just pay attention to fireballnursie's post, which I have conveniently included right hee yah

My own brother mocks me for wanting to be a nurse, he thinks they just put band aides on fingers as well! I ignore him because I know that nurses carry a lot of responsibility and actually have the capability to SAVE lives. Don't let it get to you, it's your own opinion that counts.

I'm a veteran (Cavalry Scout), so I have a built-in come-back: We broke things and killed people in the Army, I'm fixing things and saving lives now, got a problem with that?

Just gonna add to this but who cares what other people think. I'm a nursing student, but I know what I'll say. "I'm a nurse sucka... But ill always be a Marine!"

I feel for you mate I do, I am a male nurse and have come across a lot of sexism in both the work place and within society. There are so many ignorant people out there who have no understanding what we do and how hard it is to do it.

Just remember that as a nurse you will be the reason a young man has another 50 years with his wife, or that the two year old child you treated can breath again. A person is called a Hero for saving a life, you save a Hundred and your a Nurse.

We are the true heroes we get little pay, shouted at, slandered in the papers, work long shifts, deal with things that no person should have to deal with and we get up every day and do it with a smile.

You and every other nurse on this site is an unsung hero, and when someone degrades you for it you can just smile back and know that what your doing makes a real difference.

keep smiling !!

Sorry about that! I've had that happened to me before too.

I've found that certain people will always put others down no matter what (they tend to be the ignorant ones). I think the best way to deal with this type of people is to love what you do, do it really well, and show it. Your confidence in yourself and your successful career will make them look silly.

Just tell them how much money you make... and they'll shut up.

The world is full of stupid people, the only opinion that matters is your own.

Instead of taking a hit on your self-esteem, pick up your Kahunas and man up. Don't give them a chance to fit the typical ignorant "media nurse" for you, throw out the real "Nurse" at them and watch their reactions as you tell your stories.

Or....you can just grow a mountain man beard. There's nothing manlier than a mountain man beard.
