When did you last see a nurse wearing the old school garb?

Cap, white stockings, and all. Do you have one?

I wear white dress/cap/stockings...(plus a lab coat when I leave the floor)...I love it..the patients and families love it. We are treated with respect by both MDs and families.. they comment frequently that our staff look like professional nurses and it's so easy to know who is who...! To each his own....I don't ridicule those who work in scrubs/T shirts etc etc etc....why would anyone consider it fodder for insults that anyone is proud to wear the uniform or cap they earned??

The local nursing home here actually gives a bonus or whatever you want to call it if the nurses wear the hat, etc. and a lot of them do.

At my previous job, which I left 3 months ago, there was a nurse supervisor who wore the whole thing. Cap, white dress, white hose, white shoes, and cape. She was pretty intimidating to even the most senior nurses. Intimidating, but very respected.

Today. On Halloween most of my female coworkers don the old school nurse uniforms. I try to not work halloween because it's my favorite holiday. But if I get stuck on it I will probably wear one too if I can find one long enough (I'm 5' 11")

I just saw an RN in full garb, including cap, in the hallway at work about 30 minutes ago.

Save for the cap, one of the hospitals I did clinicals at had surprisingly quite a few "old school" nursing wearing the dresses and stockings.

My hair is very very fine, and my cap would never stay on without a square of TP folded underneath for the bobby pin to attach to. One good bump and the cap would slide backwards but the TP stayed right where it was! Nothing quite as embarrassing as walking around with 2 pieces of toilet paper stuck to your head!! I didn't mind the white dress, hose and shoe thing, because after all, nobody wore scrubs back then and white was something you just wore no questions asked. I do miss my Clinic shoes, the most comfy shoes ever until SAS came along with a thicker sole. Always wished I'd gone into a profession where I could wear shoes that made noise.

I regularly work with a nurse who wears head to toe white daily but no cap (skirt/dress, hose, shoes). I kind of envy the fact that dressing in the morning must take very little thought :-) We dress business casual in my area.

Well, I graduated in 1984 and wore mine for about two years. My son stepped on my cap so that ended that. Wore whites for quite awhile though and they didn't have pants back then. I disliked wearing my cap because it always got caught in Tele wires, IV tubing, etc. or maybe I'm just clumsy. My mom was a WW2 army nurse and I loved seeing her cape and her cap that you had to starch and button to make it stand up correctly.

I have always maintained that one should ACT like a Nurse rather than "look like a Nurse". After all anyone can buy scrubs or white costumes at a costume store. What matters is that we perform like a nurse. Telling people what you are and having a big RN on your name tag speaks loudly enough. Wearing a costume not so much, you gotta have the soul of the the Nurse to do the work of a Nurse. It takes so much more than what you wear.

One of my nursing school instructors would wear the traditional garb to every clinical, circa 2008.
