What do I mean obsession? Well, the stuff that interests you the most with nursing, the stuff that you are compulsive about, etc.
My nursing obsession are bowel movements. My patients better be gettin' rid of the brown stuff or I will be questioning it all day! During patient teaching, regardless of the subject, I ALWAYS talk about the importance of fibre.
Side note: the inspiration of this thread stems from this big bowl of strawberry All-Bran I'm eating.

For me it's Delusions. I know weird, but I love to hear all about what delusions my patients have. Although I have found a couple that were considered delusions but were probably just exaggeration's or misinterpretations of there current situation. Although I did run into one pt that we thought was very paranoid and delusional but it turned out to be true...

I love getting called to the ED and peds floors to start tough IVs. There's an adrenaline rush that comes with getting an IV in a sick kid that everyone from the nurse to the attending to the IV team has stuck and missed, and you get it on the first shot.
The poor resident is thanking you with awe and tears in his eyes, since he won't get his tail whooped for having to bother his attending to place a central line, and the attending is shaking your hand and saying you prevented a kid from getting an intraosseous placed.
I practically float out of the room when stuff like that happens.

Mine too! After a patient is D/C'd, I'll take the time to carefully hang the cords seperately and coiled properly, whereas everyone else just bunches them up on one hook. I've had too many criticals come in and had to frantically untangle leads and cords. If they're on a patient, I'm constantly keeping everything straight plus keeping IV lines from getting tangled in the mess. One of our new nurses last year thought I was OCD about it till she was transfering a critical to CT and when we moved the patient to the CT bed, his Propofol line was pulled out. I now have a new accomplice in my madness!

tape....
I hate going in to see my pt first thing in the morning, attempting to flush his PIV, and then seeing a sea of tape over it! C'mon people!
LOL, I know some are more prone to being pulled out, etc....but jeeze, ease up a bit. Especially on the poor men with bunches and bunches of arm hair...ouch! :uhoh21:
