What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?

Nurses General Nursing Nursing Q/A

Nursing is a profession that often involves long lonely night shifts in eerie hospital wards. It's a perfect breeding ground for ghost stories. These stories often involve sightings of apparitions, strange noises, and unexplained events that are said to have taken place in hospitals, hospices, and other healthcare settings. Some of these stories are believed to be based on true events, while others are purely fictional. Regardless, they continue to captivate and intrigue both nurses and non-nurses alike - providing a spooky glimpse into the world of healthcare after dark.

I know you have seen and heard freaky things. Share your nursing ghost stories...

Are these all really real??

Nope, we all have nothing better to do than sit around and think of stories to tell. :icon_roll

My True story is this.. my first nursing job was a very small rural hspital, -which is now shut down- sometimes we had only 2 patients , I worked a lot of nights, It would be me and another RN in house, it was 2 floors but the botten level was like the kitchen and storage, ect.. there was an elevator, often, at night between the hours of 2-4 a.m the elevator would just come up from the basement ( 1st level) to the 2nd, no one on it, no one down there, the door would just open, ( we could hear it coming if we were at the nursing desk) ) and then the door would open and then about 10 minutes later or so , it returned the way it came up. It sent goose bumbs up the back of your neck! and also sometimes around 3 a.m the phone would ring --no one there--just dead silence. This happened about every 3 nights. weird!!

Most of these stories are true.

Wondered if you have any Christmas ghost stories?

I was on a very busy medicine unit. I had just gotten a pt up from er, so i was attempting to get him in and settled. All the doors to the rooms were very hard to open and very heavy (you know the kind that you pretty much have to body slam to open) well every time i started to go throught the hundred questions you have to ask the door would come flyin open, so after about the third time said well maybe the latch is messing up so i wiggled the handle, opened and closed the, door pulled on it ( im sure i looked like i should have been on a locked unit) feeling confident i turned to the pt and said i think its fixed now. As I smiled and started back to my questions the door flew open again.... this time the pt looked at me and said " you know what i dont think we are alone" we just stared at each other for about 10 seconds he said exactly what i was thinking.. so feeling a little spooked i hurried through my questions and went into the nursing station telling what had just happened the PCT looked at me and said were you in room 216 thats been happening in there and the bathroom door has been doing it too ever since Mrs>>>> had passed away last week.... yep every time i got a pt tothat room i always waited for the door to come open

This thread is amazing! I have to post a story here even though it isn't nursing or hospital related - but it is faith/spirt related!

My husband and I were both raised Catholic and had an opportunity in 2004 to do a study abroad in Italy while at Michigan State University. We are not super religious, but we had 2 really freaky things happen to us while were there.

While in Rome for a week, we were on a church visiting blitz - with only a week we were trying to get in as much as possible. Well my Husband Josh went to school at U or D Jesuit in Detroit, and he's got this real thing for the Jesuit's - so he found this church in our tour books that has to do with the Jesuits, so I agree to go to what feels like our 100's church. They are all beautiful - but are starting to look the same at this point.

We find this church just outside the city limits and it didn't look like much from the outside. I remember distinctly though stepping over the threshold from the sunny Italian afternoon to this shaded and cool atrium of the church and I got major major chills. I was seriously a sweating pig and then once inside the church the hairs on my back just went straight up. I was pretty quiet inside and there were no tourist which was a pleasant surprise. This man approaches in in the old school brown robes of a brother and asks us how he can help us. This is not very common for someone from the church to approach you - since they see so many tourist, but the man spoke great english and we told him were were just here to look around. He then tells us that we have to see the relics that are here and proceeds to lead us to this back room behind the alter. We follow and the freakiness commences.

So we go into this room and once you enter it, it felt like that scene in Indiana Jones Last Crusade where Jones meets with the knight guarding the Holy Grail - in this room that hasn't been entered in centuries. There was like this pressure and my ears almost felt like I was on a plane or something. The brother then guides us to these really large illuminated cases that are holding various relics. There was some of the splinters of wood from the cross that Jesus was nailed on and a few of the thorns from his crown of thorns.

The relics were cool - but you see tons of this stuff because there was a huge market for these things throughout the centuries. So no big deal. The brother then points out to us this exact scanned copy of the Shroud of Turin that the church has on display. Now there is alot of rumors and speculations about the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin - but this copy, which was done in 2000 and is an exact perfect replica of the original one brought my husband and I literally to our knees. We looked at this full length color beautiful image of this man who is dead and we both just start crying.

I can't even explain it. I have never had anything like this happen before and since this day. We both were just standing there with tears running down our faces for no reason! The detail was astounding and beautiful. I felt like there was someone with me, some pressure or something - it was totally unreal. It was almost like being underwater.

Now I know you reader either are like amen sister or think I am loon. I am 100% honest to God know there was someone in that room with me who was not of this realm. I have NEVER seen my husband cry - that was the first and only time! I just remember thinking this man died a very painful death and it was so tragic and so beautiful.

So we cry ourselves out (the Brother has since left us to our sniffling) and we proceed to take a last look around and go to the gift shop. I was looking for a postcard or something of the mosaics'. We enter this tiny little gift shop and there is this frail, old Brother sitting in a chair by the exit. The man must have been well over 80 and he was a hunchback. ( I am so not kidding!) I have never seen a man look more like Yoda in my life! We go to pay this man for our post cards and he starts speaking to us in english. He says something like I am glad you were able to come here - they way he said it though was weird - like glad you able to walk in or something. I ask him what he means - and he proceeds to tell me that he sits by the exit every day and watches people try to enter the church. Okay - so my hair is yet again rising on my back! He continues saying that a lot of people will walk up to the door - hesitate and then turn back around and leave - they were never able to cross the threshold! Josh and I are totally just looking at each other - like you have to be kidding right. The Brother then very seriously begins to tell us that evil can't come in the church due to the relics - they wont allow entry and so these people are prohibited from coming in. It was so surreal, and this Brother was so 100% dead serious.

Josh and I booked it out to there and re-grouped outside with a cold drink and a park bench. We both came to the conclusion that we both felt someone or something in that church that was not normal. I have never, ever ever ever ever ever ever felt that connected, or touched since that one church.

Something else weird that happened was when we developed our pictures after our 2 month stay there. We get our pictures back and they all are looking normal except for the ones I took in that church. There are these white orbs (again I am not kidding!) in about 3 of the 10 pictures I took inside there. Now what is weird is there were no bright shinning things or anything that would create glare, and my camera was brand new for that trip - so no camera errors or flash issues. It is so strange! My hubby and me to this day swear there was something going on with that church!

Sorry - really long post - but true and crazy story that needed to be shared! Ohhh I have the chills now!

Ever thought of getting a priest in there?:chair::chair::chair::chair::chair::chair:

when working at a maximum security forensic hospital for the criminally insane, i had the scare of my life! another nurse and myself entered the hallway where a psychologist had been murdered and a social worker had been held hostage and raped by 3 patients that had gotten into the locked area. this incident had happened many years before. we had to use the bathroom and when we entered we noticed that the hallway was extremely quiet, all the doors to the offices were locked and we made sure we locked the two doors we entered. as i unlocked the bathroom door, i heard a male voice moan loudly! i didn't want to appear crazy so i slowly went to close the bathroom door because i wasn't about to go in there! as i closed the door there was a heavy sigh from this same male voice! as i locked the bathroom the door i asked my fellow nurse if she had heard "that". she looked at me in shock and stated she had! we slammed the door shut, ran down the hall, unlocked one set of doors to get out and then got out the last set of doors to the main hallway! we were so scared that we had to call security to come and check out the hallway where we had been. they checked every office and the bathroom and told us that there was no one anywhere in that hallway. needless to say neither of us ever went down that hallway again unless it was daytime and there were numerous other people in the hall. i know that male voice was the voice of the psychologist that was murdered there as he tried to save the social worker from those 3 insane patients!

I work as a CNA and it was time for 10PM night rounds at the nursing home we work at. Anyway it's said that there is a ghost of a resident that died quite a few years ago and she looks like a resident we had at the time this happened. A call light came on from a resident that it totally independent and very with it. She was complaining and getting very upset that "suzie" was trying to get into her bed. The aide that went to answer her call light insisted that no one was in the room and no other residents in the hall way. But to asure her more she went to "suzie's" room to check on her and she was sound asleep with her alarms pluged-in.
