Nursing is a profession that often involves long lonely night shifts in eerie hospital wards. It's a perfect breeding ground for ghost stories. These stories often involve sightings of apparitions, strange noises, and unexplained events that are said to have taken place in hospitals, hospices, and other healthcare settings. Some of these stories are believed to be based on true events, while others are purely fictional. Regardless, they continue to captivate and intrigue both nurses and non-nurses alike - providing a spooky glimpse into the world of healthcare after dark.
I know you have seen and heard freaky things. Share your nursing ghost stories...
Darn - I'm at the end! I finally finished all 137 pages. Guess I'll actually have to spend my days getting work done now. Come on..... lets hear some more!!
I don't remember if I posted this one or not, so bear with me.
We had a new STNA go into room 1. She was going to stock for the next patient and came out of the room running. Reports that something white and big knocked her back when she opened the bathroom door and she said her hair actually flew back. About 3 days later the new patient's daughter told me she saw a the outline of a huge white angel wig at the end of her mom's bed...
My critical thinking teacher was talking to us about the theorist, Jean Watson and how she believed in a higher power. We then went around the classroom and people shared their stories that occured in the health care setting. Stories ranged from patients describing a patient that had just died to weird things happening to them. In the essence of Halloween, I was wondering if anyone had any interesting stories to share that happened to them at work or a night clinical. It sounded fun!!
Threads merged.
I don't have any stories though i've heard some from friends. I'd LOVE to get all these together and write a book. Fascinating.
My friend was in nursing school a couple years ago and she worked at an extended living facility. She worked a lot of nights and one night she had a patient who was not doing great. they checked him earlier that night and he was asleep. a few hours later the call bell went off so they went into the room to discover that he had died at least an hour or so before. Turns out the place has its own resident ghost. The facility is actually the old hospital called St. Michaels. It was run by nuns many years ago. The hall where this resident died has many different stories about a nun coming in and sitting with a patient etc. my friend said she once saw her walking down the hall and it freaked her out.:scrm: The coffee machine will turn itself on and make a fresh pot of coffee even though noone is around. I've talked to the senior nurses on my floor that worked in the old building before they were moved to the new one and they told me that similar things had happened when they were there.
Fascinating, but never happened to me.

Well, this is kind of a nursing ghost story, I am a nurse, and it is a ghost story, so I'll tell it.
We live in a haunted house, I know of one ghost, possibly two. We were even talking with TAPS about them coming to do an investigation, however, I decided not to - in New York you have to disclose if your house is haunted, and I didn't want it formally "documented" as haunted - right now I feel I can say it is my "opinion" - don't want to screw with the resale value.
Our female ghost is named Mary. I found this out from another nurse I work with who grew up playing in this house with her two friends, this nurse is now in her 60's. I named our ghost Mary the first week we were here in 2000, she just "felt" like a Mary. While at work one day two years ago, I was telling Stella about my ghost Mary, she found it intriguing, so she called her two sister friends who grew up here and began telling them of my stories - one sister said, "Stella, our mothers name was Mary!" Stella said, "It was not, it was Isla!" The sister said, "No, she went by Isla, but her given name was Mary!" Stella said her hair stood up. Anyway, that is my brief hx, now for one or two stories.
One day I was in my basement painting a piece of furniture. My husband was in the garage sanding, so I was alone in the house. I was at the far end of the basement room, which is 30 feet long, so my exit was 30 feet behind me. I felt a very gentle "tug" on my shirt. I was so gentle, that I passed it off as my shirt settling on my body, and I kept on painting. About a minute later, I felt a sharp "TUG" on my shirt. I whirled around instantly, and no one was there, no one would have been able to get out that fast without being seen and/or heard. The hair stood up on my neck, and ran out of the basement and out to the garage and told my husband what had happened. I decided that I would NOT allow a ghost to frighten me in my own house, besides, the ghost never touched me before. I went back down to the basement and in a loud voice, I said "I do not mind sharing my house with you, but you are not to touch me or frighten me again, okay Mary?" It never happened again.
One night my hubby and I were in our soaker tub relaxing in our upstairs bathroom. We weren't talking, just sipping wine. I distinctly heard someone come up the front stairs, walk down the hall, "jiggled" the bathroom door knob, then continued down the hall to the back stairs and went down the back stairs. I said to my husband "Please tell me you heard that!" he said "Yes, stay here, I'll go look around. He threw on a robe and went looking through the house. The windows were all closed and locked as were the doors. There was no other "living" person in the house with us.
What caused me to call TAPS, was this incident, which completely un-nerved me. My hubby and I had been watching TV, a re-run of "Friends" and I wanted something to drink. In order to get to the kitchen from the living room, you have to walk through the dining room. The lights were off in the dining room, but they were on in the kitchen and the living room, so the room wasn't completely dark. I rounded the corner and dam near ran completely into this dark almost smokey opaque form - I managed to side step it in the last instance, and as I turned my head to look at it as I passed, it was gone.
This "thing" had the vague shape of a head and shoulders, but then progressed into a shapeless sort of blob. It was tall, about 6'6" because we have a plate rale at the 6 foot level in our dining room, and this was taller. It also had substance, because it blocked the light from the kitchen. This completely freaked me out, and I felt it was evil. This episode happened about 4 years ago. Nothing like it has happend since.
Our house is 107 y/o. Between 1984 - 2000, the county coroner did three body removals from this house - I only know this because I worked with her in the ER, and she didn't tell me about it until after I began telling her my ghostly happenings. One of the bodies was Mary "Isla" - she told her daughters she would never leave "my house" - and she has apparently been true to her word. Two others were also elderly persons.
None was due to foul play. I asked.
Well, that's my tale for tonight, I could go on and on, feeling something sitting on my bed, seeing the imprint of someone on my bed, rappings and knocks, the cats watching something in tandum moving above and behind me (many, many times), the apparitions, but if I tell you everything tonight, I won't have anything to post another time.
Blessings
