What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

The town next to mine prints the names of new babies in our newspaper, and several babies from this town in recent months have been named Aryan  . I'm assuming it's pronounced A-ryan, but I just can't imagine an L&D nurse not knowing what that word means and advising the parents against it. There have been a couple of Aryannas as well.

And no, it's not Aryan Adolf or Aryanna Evabraun or anything like that. We have a lot of meth in this area but I'm not aware of any white supremacist enclaves in the region.

We recently had a patient named Tyler in the CVU. I did a double take, then noticed he's elderly. Wasn't expecting that.

I had a step father make his step daughter name her baby boy,

Orso Tatonka. The name came from the movie dances with wolves and means "Bear Buffalo", respectively. The step father and her mother had several small children at home, but they were all girls and we soooo excited they had a male "they "could name.

The family is so messed up, the father of Orso was her sisters boyfriend, and her sister had recently had a baby by the same father. They were happy that the babies would be brother and sister, as well as cousins. Sheesh go figure.

Aryan originally means indo-aryan, Indo-iranian, etc. It never meant white or "superior race" until Hitler decided to use the term. I doubt he even knew it referenced actually ancient dark skinned people of the mesopotamian and indan continents. Just like the swastika was actually an African symbol. interestingly if you go to Concord, NH to the public library and look up at the building, it is adorned with swastikas all around the facade. It was built I think in 1933, a year after Nazis began using the symbol.

Specializes in LTC Peds - profoundly retarded.

I have a patient whose name is Romeo. His brother's name - no kidding- is Smooth Love. For obvious reasons I won't give a last name. WHAT?????

i figured swastika to be indian in origin, not african. have seen on tv that temples and statues in india adorned with it. so looked it up on wikepedia.

the word swastika is derived from the sanskrit svastika (in devanagari, स्वस्तिक), meaning any lucky or auspicious object, and in particular a mark made on persons and things to denote good luck.

here is the wikepidia link. very interesting to read up on.

What a coincidence! That's my baby's name! I'd been considering it and even had a few people from here vote on it! The choices were "Female", "Orangello" and "Lemonjello." When she was born, she was already named "Female" because that's what was on her hospital wristband. I thought it must be fate and therefore she's known as "Female." It even rhymes with Tamale! :trout:

Just so you know, that's an old urban legend. You can read about it at http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.asp

Let me go bang my head now after reading about baby "Female" for the umpteenth time... :p

If csuf_student_nurse 's mother saw this first hand then the myth would be debunked

Has to be DORCUS for a baby girl...
