This question has probably already been asked a millon times but please answer it once more :) . I have only a couple more classes to take before I can apply to nursing school next year, but my question is the school I go to, which is a community college, only requires that you have a 2.0 gpa, but is that the real deal? I have a higher gpa a than a 2.0 but not a 3.0 so I was wondering what my chances were. Thanks in advance.

Hi Butterfly!
It all depends on the admission process. Some schools only require a 2.0, but also have a lottery system, so it's all based on luck :) Some schools require at least a 3.0 and then they select students from highest GPA to lowest along with community involvement, hospital experience, etc (but that is mostly for the Universities here in Ca.) I would double check with your school to see if the program is impacted, and if it is, how they select students. Hope that helps!

I agree, it all depends on the school.
The CC where I will go only requires a 2.0, but acceptance into the program is based on GPA ranking.
It all depends on who is applying for each semester. If 110 people apply that have a 4.0, they will get the seats. All the 3.77 and below will not get accepted.
If ONLY 2.0 people apply, then 110 2.0 students would get in.
(Again, depending on your school's program, you may want to retake some of your classes to get your GPA up. ALSO....for the school I will attend, the GPA only is based on the prereqs grades, not courses which do not apply to the program.)
Good luck :)

I've noticed a lot of schools say they want a certain GPA but they actually let in the people with the highest GPAs. So just do the best you can. Just because they say 2.0 doesn't mean that getting all C's is ok.

Yes I have found this to be true at my school. They *say* once you have a 2.5 but last semester they didn't let anyone in below a 3.5....soooooo it really all depends on the GPA's of the people applying.
Thanks for all the info, my school only goes by the GPA of the prereqs so I should be find then I just found that out.
Good luck, Butterfly3001.

Good luck to you. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that you should try and get the highest score possible on your entrance exam (ie NET test or whatever test your school uses if they use one) even if that means retaking the test to get a higher score. My school gives "points" for each pre-req finished, with more "points" given the higher a GPA, a certain number of "points" based on NET scores, and a certain number of "points" r/t the recommendations you submit from employers/teachers etc. Unfortunately, a lot of schools go by GPA and test scores alone, which I think is terrible. My friend graduated with all Cs and Bs, and she only had about a 2.5 when she entered school (she went to a private school so it wasn't as hard to get into the program), and she's a much better nurse than a lot of nurses I know who graduated 4.0. There's a big difference between being book smart and being a good clinical nurse. Unfortunately, it's hard for schools to make that kind of a determination based on applications. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get there. If you don't get in, retake some of your pre-reqs to get your GPA up, and try try again!

It depends on how many people apply and what their GPA is. You need a 2.0 to be eligible to hand in your application for the program and be considered as a possible candidate, but be aware that the higher the GPA the better the chance of getting accepted. If most or many students who apply with you have a higher GPA, they more than likely will be selected. This by all means is not to discourage you to apply, it is just an honest answer to your question based on what I know from my school and other schools in the country.
You need to talk to your advisor and ask them to tell you exactly how they go about in the selection process for the program you will be applying.
I wish you the best of luck Butterfly.

The cc here is first come first serve after completing pre-req's and a 2.5 GPA or better for A&P 1 and 2. The waiting list is 2-3 years.

It all depends...every school is different with their admissions process..some schools choose students soley based on GPA rank...others look for the most well rounded students, i mean they look at everything about you in general...some schools choose based on a lottery...some go on first come first serve...just all depends:) good luck!!!!!!
