What's your long term goal?

Published

I'm just curious what most of you are aiming for. Is it a diploma, associate's, bachelor's, master's, phd? I'm applying to diploma and associate's programs first because I want to be able to work sooner. But I definitely want to pursue a BSN after that, and then hopefully a Master's (I'm thinking Nurse Practitioner.) I know it's so early and I will undoubtedly experience things along the way that will shape me, but that's my plan for now. How about you? Anyone else thinking that far ahead? I even have the schools planned out and everything LOL.

Right now I am aiming for a BSN program (fingers crossed I get in this fall!). Ultimately I am setting my sights for becoming a CRNA, though I have a friend who is a NP in the ER and that seems like it would be a very interesting job as well. I have a contact for a CRNA to shadow, and I would also like to find a NP as well. Even though life has a way of leading you in a direction different from what you originally intended, I still think it's important to make plans to reach that goal in the mean time. For example, I am taking chemistry and microbiology right now. I need at least an A- in chem to get into the BSN program and only a C for micro and yet I spend twice as much time studying for micro as I do chem. I want an A in both; I don't want a mediocre grade come back to haunt me in the future. I don't want to limit myself with what will just get me by today.

I too have researched different MSN programs even though I'm years away from applying. I want to keep things in perspective and it motivates me to do better now when I see where the bar is set :specs:

CRNA is also on my radar :D

So, since you are like me in planning way far ahead, are you like me in going crazy waiting in the meantime? LOL

Very much so! I've been going crazy waiting to start nursing school while finishing my pre-reqs. I'm sure I'll be antsy to start working once i'm in ns, and once I'm working as an RN, I'm sure I'll be juming at any chance to gain the experience I need to prepare myself for the APN portion of my career! It's exciting and frustrating at the same time. I feel like a little kid who just wants it NOW!

i'm in a traditional bsn program right now, my goal is to get into the actual nursing school part. enroll in the army or navy nurse candidate program and hopefully graduate and be commissioned.

nocheapones-Your post is word for word exactly what I would have said!

what are the army/navy programs like? how do you get in and what are your obligations afterwards?

My goal is to get my ADN and then go for my BSN. I don't want to wait too long to start a family, so I'll pursue an MSN later.

I told my husband before I started my NS journey (still doing pre-reqs!) that the only regret I had was not finishing school years ago. I was going to be doing an ASN with a bridge later on. However, I happened to pay more attention to the BSN program at my first choice school and I was able to use my previous credits, take 2 extra pre-req classes and get into their BSN program instead.

I hope to initially work in trauma or an ER and then eventually get into occupational nursing. That way I can work for my hubby and when he goes to run these jobs I can go too and we'll be on the same schedule. Our long term goal is to sail away on our sailboat, fly back when a job is happening, and then back to the boat during down time. Maybe even help out on some islands in an unofficial capacity when I can.

My goals also to go to up to my masters. Being a mother of three(son 15 & daughters 13&12) and wife I have decided to take it on degree at a time. I actually start my pre-regs in August and I am dying to start. I am all of them the fall & spring having to take on more class in the summer, then I can apply to nursing school.

I will be applying for BSN programs for Fall 2010, so hopefully I'll get in somewhere, but I have ASN programs I am applying to as well, so I plan on working my way up no matter how it happens. I ultimately plan on getting my MSN because I eventually want to teach nursing, as well as work as a nurse.

Right now, I'm hoping to be in a BSN program this fall. I'm a mother of 2. I have a 3yr.old daughter and a son on the way. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA. I've been studying up on requirements and what it takes to be a CRNA 1 1/2 years now. I will find a CRNA to shadow to get the clinical side of it. That's why I'm working so hard now to keep my GPA up because I know it will make or break me in the long run.
