As a new nurse, what is it?Mine is starting iv's. I'm getting good at it too. It's something I never had the chance to do in school, so I was nervous about it at first, but now I love it!

I love flushing IV lines for some reason. I feel like a "real" nurse when I do it. Maybe cuz I've done it so many times now, that I don't need to ask questions about how you do it-so I feel so efficient when I do them-hence, I feel like a "real" nurse. Can you tell I'm a new grad? :)

silly, but central line dressing changes. I love to see a spotless central line site, with a perfectly applied dressing with no wrinkles.

My best skill seems to be starting a urinary cath (male or female). My co-workers say I have most sterile method and quickest time......I could almost do it blindfolded. I would not say it is my fav skill:D .....I wish I could start an IV; out of many attempts, I have yet to be successful:scrying: ......any tips?

Start feeling and tracking your own veins and those of your friends. If they have good veins don't need a tourniquet. close your eyes and track the vein by feel only. Get used to the spongy feel of the veins. Start by putting needle through skin to the side of the vein then go for the vein. A lot of new starters will blow the vein by going right through it as they push through the skin.Go slowly and steadily, but don't "ease it in". Learn something from every attempt. Why didn't it work? Did it blow, fagile veins or touniquet on too long. Can you try without a tourniquet? Smaller needle needed or larger? I have found sometimes a larger needle will work better if the veins blow easily or if the viens are tough and roll away. There will be days when you can't hit the side of a barn standing next to it, alter your techniqe a bit and usually you'll get better and better.
Oh by the way, I love to do ABG sticks, a challenge that not all master.

well i can say this...depending on the vein type....i can start 9 out of 10 in the hand...i use alot of pressure on the center knuckle pulling the skin tight ....keeps the vein from rolling......hope this helps
ME TOO!! I was so pumped the other day to get one on a lady whose pressure was 70. (She was on levophed, and the drip rate kept going up,up,up) Weak, barely there radial pulse, and I did it
(BTW, the lady was extubated, BP stabalized, transferred off the unit:) )
