I'm just glad no one found the redneck humour thread we had going a while back.:chair:

But I think you are right an ability to laugh at yourself is one of the greatests gifts around. It only really loses impact and becomes malicious when it is used to put another person down. One day I will write up a whole list of Australian jokes!!

ME: I'm not accusing you of being racist, as you'll see if you re-read my post. My point was to show you and others that those of a "redneck" culture are fair game for jokes and stereotyping. If you had changed your story to any of the other ethnic / religious / sexual orientation groups that I listed, it would NOT have been thought of as funny. Why?

Remember "Amos and Andy"?. The television show was pulled from the airwaves in 1953 due to what many saw as a demeaning presentation of African Americans. However, the "Beverly Hillbillies" were presented as stereotypes of a Southern culture, yet there was no outcry? Why?

I'm sure there are many answers, but I suspect it has something to do with whites being the majority race in this country and will find little sympathy by those who have been victims of discrimination and racism. But why are only whites of a Southern heritage / culture (ie rednecks, cracker, hillbillies, etc) used as the group who can be made fun of and stereotyped without anyone seeing it as a form of prejudice? Are you saying it is OK to make fun of one group, but not others? If not, then I'll start posting my favorite Pollack jokes.

Please don't think I'm on some kind of crusade to liberate my long lost-downtrodden-white trash-trailer dwelling-cousin marrying-relatives from the clutches of a society that has no feelings for them. I'm not. But remember this, you may think of rednecks as a bunch of "toothless, tobacco chewing, odoriferous folks" (your words) and I think of African Americans as a bunch of "fried chicken and watermelon eating criminals on welfare"(for those too stupid to realize I'm using stereotypes to make a point). Guess who would be called the racist...especially since I'm a Southern boy and yall all know what a group of black hatin folks weunz year down here (for those who are too stupid to realize, that isn't really me talking, ok?)

Listen, or should I say "Yall liss'n here"? I'm not asking for a holiday for the poor white Southerners or for any of you to not post jokes about anything you wish, but you can't have your fun on a one way street. If humor involving my "kinfolk" is OK, then so are yours.

And if it isn't, then please tell me why.

Hey! I feel kind of left out not being included into the group. I'm no southerner, in fact , they have a stereotype all their own up here in Maine, but I sure could be considered a redneck by some. And, that, is exactly my point. Rednecks, hillbilles, whatever you call them, are not a distinct group, thus they are pretty much fair game when it comes to ribbing. You cannot deny you are black or asian or some other minority, but there is no real definition of a redneck. Plus, that redneck could become more polished and loose the label altogether.

I is a hillbilly and danged proud of it.

My sister was told at college (she went for teaching) that she had to lose her accent and they sent her to classes to rid her of it. I have to admit, I purposely made mine exaggerated and taught it to her kids just to aggravate her.

I have a fairly prounounced accent for Kentucky, but my mother's family all had really thick Eastern Tennessee accents, so guess I have picked it up. And for all you Yankees and PC people out there, yes, there is a difference in Southern accents by region!

It's only sad if the family feels beaten and downtrodden because of their situation. They may be perfectly happy living the way they are. I didn't see anything in mj's post that indicated these folks were living miserable existances. The poorest people can have the richest lives.

ANY joke that involves race, religion or sexual orientation it is offensive.

Redneck is a way of life. It is not about flying the rebel flag driving a 4X4 or drinking beer. It is not about ethnics, it is a way of life and a way of living your life. Everyone should have pride in their heritage. But when you can't find room in that pride for humor you need to ask yourself why: is it because of pride or is it embarrassment?

My Grandparents came West with the dustbowl, I was born and raised on Puget Sound. I wandered for several years and then I found my way (back) home.

I have lived where the roads are red dirt and the only street light is at the grain elevator. Places where the phone book is 5X7, a 1/4 inch thick and covers 3 counties, if you look you find the same dozen last names.

I can drive a wheat truck, a combine and a borer. I have gotten up at 3am to start the days cooking for a harvest crew. In fact, we take our vacation to go do it every summer. Why? because it is for family and it is what you do.

I know what Cottapinello is and make it at least once a week.

I know what a covered dish social is and what you take to it.

I use lard for making biscuits because it does make a difference.

I have lived and ate well on nothing but the game killed, livestock raised and the garden I grew. I have dragged foundered cattle out of river bottoms, shot red ear turtles with a 22 for target practice and prefer smashed toads for catfish bait.

I know that sinking feeling when you find blister beetle in the alfalfa or smell the start of black mold on a wheat field, thank God I also know the feeling of having money in the bank for the next years payments if nothing else goes wrong.

My brother-in-law has a Doctorate in Natural Resource Mgmt. He left his job with the State of Alaska to raises goats out on the 11 road. I have a cousin with a Masters in Petrolium Engineering. He's worked as a farm hand for the last 14 years, raised 2 good kids, one is in school at Northwestern, the other at Ag college in Kansas. Between the 2 of them (coz & BIL) they don't have a full set of teeth, it isn't because of poverty, ignorance or isolation...it is because people have different priorities. By and all those 2 bits of faily are the fancy ones.
