OK, I'll go first----

It was a busy day in our pediatric office (what day isn't??) and I was running ragged, rooming patients, helping other staff, etc. and in between crises helping answer the phones-----I picked up a line that had been on hold for a while and chirped "Thank you for helping--can I hold you???" Needless to say, a good laugh was had by all....:uhoh3: :chuckle

Or the time I was working in the hospital and had walked in a patient's room. He was asleep; his phone rang and I answered it--it was his family, checking on how he was doing. My reply--"Oh, he's dead to the world..." (Southern for "He's sleeping peacefully"). "WHAT???" "Uh (prying foot out of mouth), I mean, he's fast asleep....".

Yikes!!! PLEASE make me feel not so all alone by relating some goofy things YOU'VE said....

Just the other day, making early a.m. rounds before listening to report, went into a lady's room for a quick assessment. Wanted to check her legs for edema and asked her to straighten out her R leg. She was an amputee. Yikes. Spanish speaking only which I guess was a good thing. I was orienting with another nurse who slapped me...playfully of course.

KidsRN thanks for the laugh. I laughed until tears came to my eyes. I can really relate....LOL! I have "foot in mouth syndrome" also.

I had something kinda similar happen to me the other day. I'm an agency nurse and was working 11-7. I had only seen this patient laying on his left side, as I went in to do his tube feedings. He's a nursing home resident with obviously not much going on upstairs. I go in to give his 6:00 meds and he is up in a chair, and the left top of his head is way sunk in! I freaked out, thinking he had hit his head somehow and made it sink in like that, even though his level of consciousness was the same as before. I found out he'd had a traumatic brain injury and had part of his skull and brain removed. Geez, they could have prepared me in that for report but at most of the nursing homes you have anywhere from 30-60 residents and are lucky to get anything from report other than "they've been okay today." :uhoh3:

madwife, my daughter is blind and needless to say has plenty of friends that are as well....they ALL say "Look at this", etc.

Actually, if you try to say something like "Feel this" it's considered insulting.

Just thought I'd let you know :p

One of our patients went home in the AM. A Doctor asked for her chart in the PM and I told him " She left us, she went home", and he said "WHAT?! She was doing so good yesterday" . We all started laughing when I told him she is still alive and went home with her son. That was just funny.

Do you know I always felt insensitive but have always managed to turn it around and the person has not known any different. :)

One of THE dumbest things I've ever said happened a couple of years ago when I was still working med/surg. I was in a good mood as I started my 3-11 shift, making rounds and introducing myself to my patients for the evening. Just as I was about to head into this one room, the call light went on, and I swooped in with an upbeat "WassUP?"..........only to find that the patient was a middle-aged African-American man:imbar

He had the good graces to overlook it, but I mean, I NEVER talk like that---mainly because I think it sounds utterly ridiculous for someone my age to try to talk like a hip-hop artist---and the one time I use "ebonics", I have to go and do it in front of a black person. :uhoh3:

Another time, my sister and I were walking around town, and we saw this house with a literal flock of pink plastic flamingoes stuck all over the lawn. I've always thought these 'decorations' were tres tacky, in the same category with paintings of matadors on black velvet and most Elvis memorabilia, and I got to poking fun at the display by standing on one foot and making what I thought might have been flamingo noises.

Yeah, yeah, I know, it was completely silly; but there I was, my head thrown back, cawing madly and fighting to keep my balance, enjoying the feeling of acting like a kid again when my sister elbowed me sharply in the ribs and hissed at me to shut up. I turned on her, intending to stick my tongue out at her, only to meet the eyes of the homeowner, who had come out onto the stoop to see what all the ruckus was about...........and he had one leg himself!! :imbar :imbar :imbar :smackingf :selfbonk: :uhoh3:
