What is the worst thing you see on your floor? I always hate when people think OB nurses don't see bad stuff. For me the things that freak me out the most are HELLP, DIC x1, and shoulder distocias. We had one patient with a liver rupture which i guess if very rare! If I remember right she didn't have any prenatal care. She actually lived.

Worst thing I see on any place I've worked (not all places have floors), was anyone asking me when I planned on taking real nursing. I'm sick of the public not understanding RPNs or their role. I'm a proud RPN, I will do my RN in the future, but that doesn't mean I'm not a "real nurse" at the moment.

Is RPN the same as LPN?

I work neuro. The worst thing I see are confused patients. Obviously, they're not that way by choice, but it's still extremely frustrating for me, having to frequently re-orient them and getting them to stay in bed. There are days that I can hear the sound of the bed alarm going off when I get home and try to sleep :-/

In LTC I see some of the grossest stuff ever and it turns my stomach, such as:

Belly buttons that are full of stinky nasty crud because no one thinks to clean them in the bath/shower.

Ears that are so full of wax that it is draining out.

Toes and toenails that are not properly washed and groomed. (toe jam, yummy!)

Elderly/confused/nonverbal residents that don't get their teeth brushed for MONTHS!

Come on, people, you wash yourself and take care of these things on your own body, why do you expect your residents to live like this?

I'd have to say the malignant testicular tumor the size of a basketball that ruptured. The man hadn't been able to walk for quite some time. Major owwww.

Very early in my career, 30-some years ago, A woman was brought to the hosp by her husband. She had not allowed him to see her undressed for along time, and she was young. She started to smell bad - horrific breast ca - both breasts were black. So sad.

Many other sad things as well.

Looking beyond the implied fetal and neonatal deaths, withdrawal babies are the absolute worst. My heart literally aches as I try to comfort these unconsolable infants and hope that they will have some quality of life after they leave the unit.

Agreed. The only time I could not control my emotions.
