I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who answered. As a student, I am most definately curious about how much I'll be making when I finally have my liscense. If for nothing else, just so that I can see about how long and hard I'll have to work to pay off my student loans. I often hear people say nurses make awesome money but, when asked, no one wants to give up that info and I have no idea how accurate salary.com or any of those websites are. So, THANKS!!!

I don't understand the reluctance of so many members of this forum to post the amount of money they make. I think it is something that is very important to the members who are not yet nurses. I hear so many variations on what a new nurse can make, it's confusing. I think we are just trying to be smart, and go where we can get the most out of all this schooling we are going through.
You have to realize that for many of us, we were raised to believe that asking someone how much money they make is considered rude and poor manners. Someone asked me at work how much I make, and I told them I wasn't comfortable sharing that information. There are plenty of websites, books etc. that will give you the salary for new and experienced RN's. Some here will tell you also and that's fine. Just realize that for some of us, such a question is considered inappropriate. We're not trying to be difficult. You'll find as you go through your career that certain topics are off limits for some, ie. religion, sex, politics and money.

Oh, you want to know how it was when we finished nursing school. In that case:

1) Surgical floor nurse

2) 40 and then some

3) New grad, of course!

4) 10 hr night shift, for a whopping 10% backshift differential, no diff for weekends or charge

5) Chapel Hill, NC

6) $750

You can't possibly extrapolate what everyone does, where they work, and their years of experience into what's going to happen for you. The fact is you're going to decide what type of nursing you want and where you want to do it, and the market in that area is going to determine your pay. As I've said to many, you'd better want to be a nurse, because you'll find it's not all about the money.

What is an LVN?
An LVN is the same as an LPN. In two states, California and Texas, basic nurses are referred to as LVNs (licensed vocational nurses). In the other 48 states the basic nurses are called LPNs (licensed practical nurses).

I am licensed in California and Texas, so I am called an LVN. If I were to apply for licensure in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Nevada, or any of the other states, I'd become an LPN. It's the same nurse with a different name in California and Texas. I suppose California and Texas need to differentiate themselves from the rest of the country. ;)

I don't know if that is a low blow are you really don't know. LVN is the same as an LPN.
For my own personal sanity I'm just going to assume the best by believing that the poster really didn't know.

I think another reason nurses are cautious to answer salary questions publicly is we're often discouraged (if not outright banned) from discussing our salaries at work, and some of us live in/work in communities small enough that would make it easy enough for someone to figure out who we are in real life... the one time I did discusss my salary with someone at work we realized that I was making slightly more as a nearly new grad than an experienced nurse who had been hired around the same time as me. Anyway...

2. How many hours u work per week? 36

3. How many years of nursing? 3

4. What Shift: Day, Evening, nights, or weekend only? rotating 12s

5. City and State- Portland Maine

6. Average 2 week pay- take home after 401k etc, with major benes being through my husband's work- $1100
