I am a new grad and will begin my new career next week. That being said, I find it disturbing you would post a survey regarding salaries. If you are studying nursing for the salary then you may want to rethink your decision. I certainly would not want you taking care of my family member if it is about the money. I chose to become a nurse because of my compassion for other people and my desire to make a difference. I have sat on the other side and know first hand the true value of a nurse. At the end of the day I will not be counting the money I earned, but recalling what I did, or what I could have done better. To be perfectly honest with you, I can not tell you off hand what my hourly rate will be. All I can say is that I will be part of a profession that I am honored to belong to. You see, I truly wanted to become a nurse for the sake of working in that capacity. There are plenty of other professions in which you can earn more and by all means will have less responsibility. In my opinion, if you are worried about the salary now as a student, nursing is not your calling.

This is so very true. I have revealed how much I earn with the hopes that it will help another aspiring nurse with their decision-making process. However, a true nurse (at heart) does not enter this field of work for the money.

I think that is why so many of us don't want to say how much we make. I personally feel that you are called to this work. Money is important, but not why you should want to do this work. If you're in it for the money, you'll burn out.

I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who answered. As a student, I am most definately curious about how much I'll be making when I finally have my liscense. If for nothing else, just so that I can see about how long and hard I'll have to work to pay off my student loans. I often hear people say nurses make awesome money but, when asked, no one wants to give up that info and I have no idea how accurate salary.com or any of those websites are. So, THANKS!!!

Suzi

awesome money???

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

did those people also tell you what you're going to have to do in a 12 hour shift???????

we're STILL ridiculously undepaid!

go be a cat scan tech! go waitress at a high end restaurant! go work for a pi..... but please do not think that the money you're going to make as an rn is in anyway commensurate with your education or responsibilites!

You know what, I get annoyed by comments like yours. Yes, you should go into nursing to help people and because you want to have a fulfulling job in which you can make a difference in people's lives. Yes, it takes heart, not just intellect, to be a good nurse. But you know what? Nurses work HARD. REALLY hard. And why not be curious about what's out there financially speaking? I never got into nursing thinking that I would be rich- by no means, but I did know that nursing paid well AND was a profession that I could be proud of, because it's not just shuffling paper- it's helping heal people. But I really resent comments like yours that infer that anyone who is the slightest bit curious about what they will be making after they graduate is in some way heartless, cold, and should never have gone into nursing in the first place.

Would you be happy making $10-15 as a new nurse? Graduate, go out there and start working, and then get back to me.

What are you going to do with your money from nursing? Are you going to give it to homeless shelters, charities, etc.? The tone of your post implies that you are into nursing because it's a great time and you have no financial responsibilities. I have bills I need to pay and fun I want to have with the money I make from nursing and I don't feel bad about it and I don't see why anyone else should either. I've been a nurse for almost a year now, and I find this career to be both rewarding and trying at times. If I didn't have to work to live I would volunteer as unlicensed personnel to fulfill my desire to help people, but I can't see myself volunteering to be a registered nurse where I can be sued for just about any action-- FOR FREE. No thanks.

6. Take-home q2weeks:

I believe WhimsieRN was attempting to indicate that the original poster was displaying multiple grammatical errors.

Even though bad grammar is annoying, we shouldn't judge the poster based on grammatical errors.

I did not judge anyone. I simply indicated my lack of appreciation for multiple grammatical errors.

You have to realize that for many of us, we were raised to believe that asking someone how much money they make is considered rude and poor manners. You'll find as you go through your career that certain topics are off limits for some, ie. religion, sex, politics and money.
