couldn't agree more..i usually sit for more than 2 hrs reading posts..its fun how people respond to certain questions and reacts violently to some out of topic insights..hahahaha:lol2:
The 'myth' we are talking about is that minority students gets tons of money thrown at them and free rides through nursing school and college JUST because they are minority.
I didn't say that. Maybe somebody else did, but I didn't. Sure, not everybody is going to qualify for everything ... that's the nature of financial aid. You've got to apply for a bunch of stuff, and a lot of it won't pan out but eventually, you can get results. I was just really surprized when people said there wasn't any financial aid for minorities.
Anyway ... sorry to get off topic ... back to the topic at hand.
Money, money, money ...

The response was to the person that said she couldn't get any money because she was not a minority. I thought I made that clear, but obviously I didn't. I was insulted by her post as she implied that minorities get all of the scholarships.Well, in California I would definitely not considered a minority, whether I went to a predominantly black university or not. They ask specifically on the applications what your ethnicity is, not whether I was a white student going to a predominantly minority college. I wasn't eligible for a lot of scholarships because of it but, that's just the way it is. It doesn't bother me because there was other money available to me as a nursing student. You asked where the minority money was, and I was just trying to answer your question. I wasn't trying to pick a fight or anything like that.

I am a new grad from cali and went looking for a job in RTP (Raleigh) area, i talked to HR rep and was told that starting salary is 18.50 at UNC chapell hill. Is that the norm in NC? If not what is normal salary after 1-2years experience? Just re-considering my move from Bay area...where starting is 40-45hr.

Don't know what average new grad pay is in Raleigh but, average RN pay across the board is $24-$25 an hour.

Although long, this thread is great! I have to agree with everyone who went into nursing for the calling, but use my calling to make a living!
Here's a question... does it really matter what you make as the average person spends 110% of their income? I have known people in poverty as well as a millionare who lived this out! Crazy!
Currently I am a travel nurse, ER specialty, 5 years experience, the last 2 contracts (one in the west and one in the east) have both paid about the same. I make approx 1700 net every 2 weeks.
... More often, people think I've a big fat pain in the orifice.quote]
Dear RNGreenhorn,
Whooooooooo! Whooooooooooo! Screeeeech! Freeze! Grammar Police Raid!
Do you know how fast you were typing M'am?
You seem to have misrepresented yourself as having a big, fat pain in the orifice (in contrast to being one).
Additional violations:
No comma between the adjectives 'big' and 'fat'.
Useage of the word 'orifice' is only permitted with possession of valid UK passport (US citizens and illegal aliens may only use the word 'ass').
We will let you off with a warning this time, but if this continues we will be forced to issue a citation and recommend that you consult a proctologist.
Clunk. Vroom. Screeeeech!
:lol_hitti
p.s. I agree with what you say. Best wishes.
Thanks for the warning officer. I certainly don't want to be hauled into the great allnurses grammar tribunal.
I know ignorance of the law is not a satisfactory excuse for breaking the law. But I truly was not aware of the "orifice" law. In the future I will endeavor not to utter or type the word "orifice" until properly licensed and qualified. From now on it's all "ass" for me!
For the record, I of course meant to type "I'm." I assure you, for this indiscretion, my editor will be canned post haste. I've no need for a proctology consult, and my chest size is a perfect 38C... well it once was a perfect 38C. Now, more like a 38L. They're not huge or anything; "L" is just the shape they seem to have taken with age. Come to think of it, my orifice (oops, I mean "ass") and chest both seem to be preparing for early retirement and heading South. But that is not the point.
I will, work, on my, comma, usage, Darn things, just mystify, me.
Cheers... (oh wait, do I need a UK passport for that word as well?)
No one said there were no aid for minorities. I was just having a ball reading posts of nurses biting each other when that person wrote some nonsense about not being able to get aid because she was responsible... and not a minority. There's a TON of aid out there for all sorts of people and all sorts of stuff. I applied but didn't get any of them... good grades and all. I don't hold that up against anyone. Shoot, stuff happens. I just got pissed when I read the minority bit. Many times people learn where I went to school and they automatically comment on the 'full ride' I must have gotten. There are scholarship opps for everyone. As someone else said, we all take a turn spinning the wheel. Folks are not knocking down any specific groups doors to cover their expenses. I don't give a damn how many links posted here.
I'm hopping off now....my soapbox that is.

Wow! Shocking how touchy this subject is. Yes I understand this is a private matter. This board is for the most part anonymous. If you are afraid someone will figure out who you are by answering a question then simply don't answer it. Don't bash someone for their grammar and their curiosity. Isn't curiosity an important characteristic of a nurse?
As a nursing student yes I am interested in what I will make as a new grad, somedays it helps keep me going knowing that we wont always have a negative balance in the bank. Each of us have our own reasons for asking about salaries for some of us it gives hope, others they want to figure out how long it will take to buy a new______ after graduation. Regardless be kind. We all come here for the same reason because we feel safe to ask questions, rant and share information.
So sorry for hijacking the thread I just had to add my two cents.
This is the myth I was speaking of. I did not qualify for any financial aid while going through my nursing program because I earned too much money. I was previously earning $40,000 yearly as a factory worker, which was supposedly too much money for a one-person household. The 'myth' we are talking about is that minority students gets tons of money thrown at them and free rides through nursing school and college JUST because they are minority.
I know this is very much off the original topic of this thread, but I was not the one who opened the dubious can of worms about "not getting any aid due to being responsible and non-minority". I'm just responding to something that is, in my honest opinion, a myth.
