Can you let us know how your survey turns out?

I see we are of like mind. I must agree with your literary review. The "sheesh'es" are a personal favorite of mine. They really portray a feeling of dumb-founded exasperation. If I were Siskel and Ebert I'd give this thread "two thumbs up." (Or in the case of Ebert one thumb-bone up--- or is that Siskel?)

But I digress. A wise man once told me, "It's only funny until someone gets hurt... then, it's hilarious."

Sharon H. RN, RNgreenhorn, please forgive me, but I juat gotta say it.

SHEESH! :lol2:

3. How many years of nursing? 2 months

4. What Shift: days, 630-3 with 1 late call and one over night call required per week, and one weekend call every 3-4 weeks.

6. Average 2 week gross pay: as a new grad my rate of pay was 11.52/hour. since i passed boards 6/30 my pay increases to 17.52/hr. Shift differentials are 10% for 2nd shift and 15% for 3rd shift, 5% for weekends. A full time employee can opt out of benefits for a 10% differential (not that I am) and call pay is a $2. PTO is acrued at 0.0923/hour and amounts to about 24 days/year.

I'm glad you asked :) I totally understand wanting/needing to know the expected income for your career choice. I'm not sure what career choices out there are to be made solely on a heart for the position without regard to income. I don't know anyone who has/would choose a career without weighing the balance of income and needs. Personally, I'm a single mom of 3 with one special needs child and I have to know that my choices will supply the needs for my children and myself, how able will I be to do so or will we just be doing so by the skin of our teeth. Yes, I love nursing and it was a career I wanted but I also had to know it would supply all our needs, not just feed the needs of my heart. Sorry if that offends, I'm a reality girl. I also wanted to make the transition of crossing the chasm between living with state/federal aide to complete self-sufficiency.

I hope this is helpful and you find the scale balances for you!

Having a bad day?

No, not really. I just really dislike short type on the computer. I am not a grammer natzi (please see multiple errors in all previous posts). Personal preference, that is all that was.

I have in the past treated these discussion boards like I was talking to someone face to face. On first gut reaction, I felt the op was rude. On reflection and through reading some of the others comments, I came to realize the OP wasn't being rude and with the anonimity of the discussion board, I shouldn't be so sensitive. Thus, I decided to reply.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I am a new grad and will begin my new career next week. That being said, I find it disturbing you would post a survey regarding salaries. If you are studying nursing for the salary then you may want to rethink your decision. I certainly would not want you taking care of my family member if it is about the money. I chose to become a nurse because of my compassion for other people and my desire to make a difference. I have sat on the other side and know first hand the true value of a nurse. At the end of the day I will not be counting the money I earned, but recalling what I did, or what I could have done better. To be perfectly honest with you, I can not tell you off hand what my hourly rate will be. All I can say is that I will be part of a profession that I am honored to belong to. You see, I truly wanted to become a nurse for the sake of working in that capacity. There are plenty of other professions in which you can earn more and by all means will have less responsibility. In my opinion, if you are worried about the salary now as a student, nursing is not your calling.
It's ridiculous to think that if someone wants to know about the salaries of their chosen career that they're not worthy of persuing that career. I am going into nursing as a second career, and need to know what type of salary I can expect. I know that I will be a great nurse, but I also need to know that I can pay back my school loans, put money back into my 401k, and survive after completing school. Perhaps if I had a second income I wouldn't care about the money but as it stands today, and at my age, salary is very important. Should one go through school with blinders on, only to realize after graduation that they can't support their family or pay back their loans. Me for one, won't have 30 years to pay off of my debt. I would have retired by then.

I don't know how old you are but, try not to judge others based on your circumstances.

1.Type of nurse?

LPN. Acute care facility that deals with med/surg pts on ventilators (for vent weaning), multi-system failure, dialysis pts, DM, Telemetry. We have it all it seems!

2. How many hours u work per week?

36 hrs. I work 3- 12 hr shifts/week. Hospital requires commitment of 2 weekends a month. And try very hard to do self scheduling.

3. How many years of nursing?

New grad! I graduated in March of this year. Just got off orientation last week and have worked 3 shifts on my own this week. So far so good. I like my job. I can understand people who say this is a calling but everyone who has to work for a living worries about money. So I'm not ashamed to admit how much I make, and not surprised people are asking. This is a very interesting profession. Those who feel it is a calling are making money doing something they enjoy. That's not shameful!

4. What Shift: Day, Evening, nights, or weekend only?

Day shift. 2 weekends a month. 12 hr shifts from 630 to 1900.

5. City and State

Phx, Az

6. Average 2 week gross pay

Just looking at my last paystub, this was a paycheck with no weekends worked (so no weekend differential pay) my gross was 1386.89 for 2 wks. Net was 1116.92. I take pay in leu of benefits also.
