Hi have one comment to make. I really hate when nurses say that one should not go into nursing if it is about "the money". I think that many wonderful & smart people with good hearts who will not stand for less than they are worth could be drawn into nursing if the price was right. No wonder we can't get payed what we are worth with these attitudes! I have been a nurse for 10 years and I never expected that I would have to put other people before my family,Miss christmas, the kids foot ball games, cousins wedding!! Have my body turned upside down doing shift work, feel like I was not important when the management treated me and others like crap, Have Doctors think that nurses do nothing while watching us do it all. I know that I am a DAMN good nurse!!! Would I do it again had I known that the pay would not meet the duties? I think not. Does that make others a better nurses than me? more commited than me? I think not. I resent the fact that people confuse nurse with missionary. Those days are over. I do not think that all the money in the world could make a person with the wrong motives stay in nursing. Others are being payed for doing a hell of a lot less than we do. Money is not the root of all evil. Tell The girl what she wants to hear!!! GIVE UP THE FIGURES LADIES!!!! Let her make an informed decision.

after 10 years and a BA I make 28.00/H about 600 a week after taxes I live in canada. I work 36h/week day shifts. overtime about 3-6h a week.

Go get your money!!! Find the best state and nurse your butt off!!!Pay those bills and Nurses your butt off!!:nurse:

right on sister!!!!!!!

one other thought I would like to inject into this discussion, do not be deceived by the high wages offered by travel nursing agencies. They will offer you $24.00 or more per hour for LPN's and even more as an RN. But check out the same print. That pay per hour includes the housing and other perks they tell you are free or included free. Usually your pay ends up after everything is accounted for somewhere around $10.00 to $14.00 an hour. :trout: Hard to live on. And this is usually for hospitals and nursing homes around the United States. Experience and time in field does not make a difference.:angryfire

I am not a nurse yet but i hope to go and become a nurse after i become a medical assistant. but i don't think it should be the amnount of money you make it should be about if you realy enjoy helping peopple and it makes you happy at the end of the day because you have helped someone to get better.

not to make anyone mad at me but thats how i would feel. But i understand that peopple have familyies to support and bills to pay so i understnad why some peopple are worryied about money.

There's a lot of talk about how much money nurses make, but I don't see it. The experienced nurses that have been working years, those who work without benefits, travel nursing, agency, or those who pick up extra shifts make some extra money, but overall the average nursing salary isn't as much as it's hyped to be. There are other fields that pay better and don't require the physical, emotional, and mental challenges or the responsibility that nursing does. Nursing provides a livable wage and I love what I do, but it is a hard job. Nurses earn their money and aren't paid what they are worth. I am a fairly new RN in an ICU in the Northwest - I'd say the average starting salary in this area is about $23/hr. There are shift incentives as well. It can vary a little between hospitals in the area, but beginning wages are comparable. I work 36 hours per week my average take home for 2 weeks is about $1500. That's after deductions for medical, taxes, etc. A lot of hospitals will offer you student loan repayment, education assistance, and other perks than salary.

About $1900, but that seems to be a meaningless figure--It says nothing about my taxes, my insurance premiums, my garnishments, my flexible spending witholdings, or my 401K. My gross pay may or may not be significantly different. I May be a new nurse who got into the right job at the right time, or I might be receiving premium pay for my experience or the type of nursing I do.

Take-home pay, also known as 'net pay', depends on several factors. Some employees contribute to 401(k) and 403(b) retirement plans, whereas other employees do not. Some people automatically deduct a portion of their paychecks to stock purchase plans and profit-sharing, whereas other people do not. Many people have expensive health insurance premiums deducted from their paychecks, while others work for facilities that do not even offer health insurance.

I am a new LVN in Fort Worth, Texas with five months of experience. In the five months that I have been employed this year, I have grossed $23,000, which approximately adds up to $4,600 monthly in gross earnings. I do not take $4,600 home each month due to health insurance premiums, disability insurance deductions, dental plan, liability insurance, and other deductions. Keep in mind that I am an LVN.

I am also an LVN in Ft Worth, w/ 10 mths exp and make about that much in a yr working the floor. What type of job do you have? zjust looking for other options in the area! Thanks!

you people are petty

Im a new grad (december 2005)

started Feb 2006 on a telemetry floor

work 3 12 hour shifts a week (days)

my take home AFTER insurance (medical and dental) is about 1400 for two weeks.

my hourly rate is 24.25 but I will be getting a 50 cent raise in 3 weeks so I will be at 24.75. In december we get a cost of living raise and in Feb (my one year anniversary I will be getting a dollar more raise):smiley_ab

Hope this helps, no big secret.
