I am a Hospice nurse. I work all the time...it seems as though Hospice takes over your life! At first, the freedom of making your own schedule is very exciting, but then you become so involved with the pts and their families that you feel like you have to be there for them! I feel responsible in giving my all, for often it is the last opportunity for that pt to have their needs met and if you're there...then it's all up to you! I have been a nurse for 16 years and I take home about 4200; I also have 401K, medical, dental, accupuncture, chiropractic and quarterly retreats! We also receive all our CEU's at the office! My job is rewarding but sometimes I feel totally burned out!

Yep, but getting flamed is sooo entertaining....

Dang grammer police never showed up.

Can't eat young that I have never had, esp when I am considered young myself. Stick that in your pipes and smoke it.

FREEZE PERP! Reach for the sky and keep your dangling participles up. Put your over-used cliches' and poor spelling where I can see em. You goin' downtown!

And spit out that young! Bad nurse.

Specializes in LTC, Home Health, L&D, Nsy, PP.

I signed on to get support and to see what others are going through...it's sad to see so many catty and self-righteous remarks! I'm with Canada! If nurses would just stick together instead of trying to place blame and look down on others we would all benefit! Yah! to Canada!

I am a new grad and will begin my new career next week. That being said, I find it disturbing you would post a survey regarding salaries. If you are studying nursing for the salary then you may want to rethink your decision. I certainly would not want you taking care of my family member if it is about the money. I chose to become a nurse because of my compassion for other people and my desire to make a difference. I have sat on the other side and know first hand the true value of a nurse. At the end of the day I will not be counting the money I earned, but recalling what I did, or what I could have done better. To be perfectly honest with you, I can not tell you off hand what my hourly rate will be. All I can say is that I will be part of a profession that I am honored to belong to. You see, I truly wanted to become a nurse for the sake of working in that capacity. There are plenty of other professions in which you can earn more and by all means will have less responsibility. In my opinion, if you are worried about the salary now as a student, nursing is not your calling.

A different perspective is that if you undergo at least two years of difficult training and testing, and have enormous responsibility as a licensed professional, you damn well should be paid a significant amount for your efforts. Doesn't mean that researching how much nurses are paid is because that's the only reason to pursue it as a career, but many people like myself want to be given the financial respect that comes along with it. Scraping by just doesn't cut it anymore for me or my family.

I was hoping somebody will say it in this post! I wonder how many nurses would be out there with an average salary of $ 6.75 an hour? Just a question for all to-be-a-nurse-for-the-love-of -it people. Nurses hold patients' lives in their hands. Such responsibility and training should be appreciated and appreciated not only financially!

Some people just can not help it. They love to put others down just to make themselves look good. If you want to be a hero- join Red Cross, go to Mexico, Russia, Africa. They truly need you. Explore the horizons! Why are you still in the US? Like the comforts this country has to offer? Don't judge others for their motives- you have the same ones!

Specializes in Mostly ETC, very interested in wounds.

I am a LPN in Bellaire MIchigan I take home approx $1,200 every two weeks. I have been a nurse for 3.5 years and I work in an ECF
I graduated and was making $12.15 an hour. I never asked while I was in school how much I was going to make. It wasn't my goal for graduating. My goal was to take care of my babies. Yes it was in 1991, but it still wasn't good pay. I make more than double now.

I was totally happy with my income. I still am. I would do my job if I was still making that. THIS IS THE POINT!!!!

I don't believe that those looking for the income are totally heartless, but the reality is that nothing pays us for what we do, it has to be in your heart. If it is not you will eventually decide that nursing is a ridiculous way to earn a living. YOU will not be out here 10-20-30 years later telling your funny stories about your nursing career.

The ones who have it in their heart are the ones who should be taking the spots in nursing school. Instead it is getting clogged with people who think we make easy money. And, making it difficult to impossible for those with a calling to get in, and to graduate

Nursing is never easy money! We are responsible for giving our patients the best of cae! We are usually underpaid! No one excuses our bills because we are nurses!
