I am a new grad that just got licensed in Indiana. I did all my schooling in Kentucky and I was floored at what LPN's can not do in IN that they can in KY. The city that I did my clinicals in KY really utilizes LPN in Hospitals, in IN, regretfully, LPN get the short end of the stick and are rarely hired in hospitals and lean more toward LTC and Clinic work. I was very upset as I was hoping for hospital work. Now, I am going for my RN/BSN to get out of LTC. Not that I don't like LTC...just not my cup of tea. :smiletea2:

You would be shock to realize what little LVN's can do in California. We have been reduced to just passing pills in nursing homes.

I couldn't do this. I just would feel like I wasn't being allowed to use all my skills and my brain would reject this. If I don't feel useful, I can't do it. :uhoh3:

Specializes in Geriatrics.

DON= Director of nursing ADON= Assistant director of nursing

The Geiko commerical "So easy, a caveman could do it!" just ran through my head.

BigB what kind of duties do you have in a Psych unit and what makes it so appealing to you? I mean when I think psych unit i think of the movie, " The Cookoos Nest". Something like that with Jack Nicholsen and various other actors. Its not like that is it? Thanks!

I have a lot of duties in this psych unit. Sometimes I pass the medicine but mostly I do saftey rounds and suicide watch. It should be noted that I am a peace officer / LVN that works in a prison. With this said I do a lot of law enforcment duties like escorting inmates to appointments, searching, etc etc. It is fun becuse it is never the same day. I need variety and excitment or I get bored easily.

P.S. A lot of inmates fake having mental illness to get into these units because they have a VERY easy time here.. Air conditioning, solo cell etc.. I like being about to find the fakers and treat the really sick ones.

How'd you pull that one off? You go through the POST academy?

:welcome: I am LVN(Texas)of 15+ years. I have worked many places because I am an agency nurse. Getting a solid med/surg background wil propel you forward..as you will always have a job. Each state has restricitons and decides how to hire or not lvn/lpns. Check with your state board and see what your restrictions are. Also check with lpn's in different facitlites to see what they can an can't do? Good Luck to you.:monkeydance:

Yes, medical technical assistants are nursing that go through a modified peace officer academy. We learn laws of arrest, search, handcuffing, etc etc.

Here's some more info about the position. It is a couples years old and doesn't reflect increases in pay and benefits.
