I signed up for a 11a-7pm shift at my work. The paper to sign up has been there for longer than a week now, and I am the only one who signed up for it so far. Looks like I might get it.
I searched for a 11-7 day shift on allnurses, but there really isn't anything I can find. I saw several 11p-7a shifts.
Has anybody worked this shift? Is it this bad that nobody signed up for it? I currently work 7p-7a, and nightshift is really killing me now. I want to just work dayshift. 7a-7p or 11a-7p doesn't matter. I will probably work 4 or 5 days a week now, but I think I am okay with it. What do you all think of this shift? I am questioning it, because I don't know why nobody else wants it in my workplace.
People seems to like 11p-7 a shift though. But not dayshift 11a-7p.
I know so many people signed up for 7a-7p shift several weeks ago. So it is not that nobody wants dayshift... Is it only because it is 8 hr shift, or am I missing something? Looking forward to reading your opinions on that.

I've worked it and I like it. But I am single and have no kids. It is an eight hour shift where you can sleep in and leave to be home in time for supper. I wouldn't want to do it five days a week though.

Given the option, most inpatient nurses will take 12 hr shifts over 8. I think doing 11A-7P means you'll come in and be taking a whole bunch of admissions since no one leaves at 11A to give you their patients. A lot of people wouldn't like this.
I am also single with no kids. I also thought about the admissions. But, it can be the other way too. I might take some people's workload, so they can get the admissions. Or I may be the first to get the admission. I mean it could be either way. One other thing, I am coming off orientation this week. So I am new at my workplace. I don't expect to be bombarded with complex admissions yet.
My best guess is that people don't want it, because it is 8 hours, and you work more days. I just hope that it is not because it is a terrible shift, and I will be miserable.

I'd personally hate working 11am to 7pm five days a week. The shift takes up a huge chunk of one's day and a decent part of the evening.
I'm glad that some people out there actually want to work this shift. I'll happily keep my 12-hour night shifts.
I feel like I would take anything now than spending my nights working. I have been doing 7p-7a for 3.5 years, and I hate it. I have done it for too long for a person who is not made up for night shift. Most careers make you work about 5 days a week anyway. So why not nursing? I am just worrying about the pace workload. It is NICU, so no exhausting physical work really. I am fine with 4-5 days/week; fine with having time for breakfast and having a morning routine. But the discharges, diagnostic studies, and medical procedures done during the day intimidate me. I hope it is doable during those hours. Especially for a newbie.

I agree with this as well. In theory you could get stuff done BEFORE work but when I worked eves, I never did and then you get home too late to do anything after work.

if i were single , I certainly would love the shift, compared to 12hr nights

The hours of this shift would effectively insure that one could do absolutely nothing that needed to be done during normal business hours. If one wants to schedule their life like this, I say more power to them, but for most, there is going to come a time when it is too inconvenient, too much of the time.

I used to work a similar shift: 10a to 6p, Monday through Friday. The shift actually wasn't bad at all. Of course that was when I was working as a Paramedic doing transports, but on the whole, I liked the shift. While you really don't get to do too much during the morning, that's a great time to wake up, get some coffee, go for a run/workout, and kind of veg-out for a bit. Then you go to work and when you come home, you still have an option to catch a movie or hang out with friends for a bit. Since it does take up a significant portion of the afternoon and early evening, it does limit your ability to do some pleasure shopping, so that may actually be good for your budget...

Its the 5 days a week thing. At my job we have but 3 8s one week and 4 the next. Thats all id handle. Also a busy shift, but I'm with you and Id rather have days than nights.
Good thing is that I don't have very much of a social life, no kids, no marriage, etc. I don't like shopping either, lol. So, really nothing but school and work I do. I have school online though.
But when I work night shift, it takes me more than a day to recover from even only one shift. I am still losing the same 4 or 5 days per week while I work 3 nights/week, because I have trouble recovering from nights. So, I am thinking that it won't be a big issue days/week wise. At least I can have healthy, awake 2-3 off days...
So, I think 11a-7pm would fit me personally.
I will better decide when I do it, but still... :)
I hope I can say the same for during the shift.
