What State Should We Call 'Home'?

Nurses General Nursing

DH and I are going to relocate to a permanent stomping ground possibly the latter half of January 2004. We are debating on which state to settle down in. I thought I'd seek advice from my Allnurses pals since so many of you have either travelled, lived, or may now reside in the areas we are looking at settling down in.

The four choices we have thus far are: Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, or North Carolina. While he was home on leave, we visited two of the four places, and like them both.

If you know of the job possibilities in these states for nurses (he's a nurse too), let me know. He already has his Bachelor's in Health Science Degree, and is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in hopes of one day managing a hospital (to show the powers that be how it's really done.) :D The man rocks bigtime!

I am planning a return to school to become a social worker UNLESS I find a hospital that treats its nurses like human beings and professionals to boot! :)

Any helpful hints/suggestions would be appreciated.

Okay Karen......two post means two hoorahs for Delaware and PA! :chuckle

Delaware is a beautiful quaint little "village town" that I so loved when I visited there (TWICE) over the past few years. I really loved Rehobeth Beach, and could live there in a heartbeat. :)

DH and I really like NC for the big military base there which would offer us many healthcare services as retirees.

May do a travel nurse assignment while hubby is still overseas just to see if those states are a good fit for me and DH.

Ashville, NC is BEAUTIFUL! And I do love the ocean although my favorite oceanview is STILL along the California coastline.

Great thoughts siblings! Keep 'em coming!

Hello LarryG :)

My DH is from PA, but he doesn't want to live there anymore. I happen to like some parts of PA myself. He loves going home to visit, but says he won't live there again. So........we continue our search for a "home" to settle down in next Spring.

I would stay where I'm at if he could find employment good enough for him, but he doesn't seem to think this areas has it going for itself employment wise, but is quite impressed with the Indianapolis area and the big businesses there.

We both enjoyed living in NC before, but I don't want to move so far away from my kids and grandkids.

It's really a lot tougher job than I thought trying to decide where we two should settle down. Anyone else have this problem before? What helped you to overcome it? Are you comfortable with the choice you made?

Thanks everyone!

Come to Florida and pay less taxes. As a LPN you could be a Case Manager did you know that? Work for an insurance co. or anything else like that and have much lower cost of living.

It takes forever to get a nursing license in Florida, and it's awful expensive! I love visiting Florida, but really don't think I could ever live there due to the hot & humid climate. It is sooooo not me. :D

Cheerful,

You know how I feel about living here in State College. I LOVE IT! New interstates going through, the area has turned into a booming city, you name it. I don't even have to be concerned with getting to my appointments. The county van service provides a lift van for me. So many positive things have happened for me since I moved here. Ooh, yeah. I definitely found my home.

Oh I sit here at home

Not really alone

For on this new computer I play

I may say not a word

But my voice is still heard

From my computer I log on each day

Home home here at home

Where I'm not really alone

Where seldom is heard

A discouraging word

A my lights are shining all day.

but fun to think about: where to settle down and eventually retire. Although it's hard for me to think about leaving my kid (and his eventual family) my DH gets the itch to move every spring.LOL.

It is very hot here in Texas and don't think I want to live here as I age. Something more temperate maybe.

I've heard North Carolina is absolutely lovely and the best of seasons, climate, mountains and beaches.

Good luck on your search! I always tell my hubby if he finds the job he wants that will guide us, as a nurse can find work almost anywhere.

That's the same thing I keep telling my hubby. Find a job he likes and pays enough to support the both of us and I'm game to move where that job is. He tells me to choose where I want to live, but as soon as I say California (my favorite place to live :D ), he says "Don't think so dear."

Then we start all over again. When he called me today from overseas, he told me to hang up a USA map, close my eyes, then throw the dart. Wherever the dart lands that is where we will move. Welllllllllllllllllllllllll....I COULD just let it land on California....you know.....perfectly land on CA! :D
