I start school for my ADN in a couple weeks. I am very excited to say the least... I thought nurses were in high demand, but after reading these posts I am seeing that new grads are having a hard time getting hired. So I would like to know from everyone what was your first RN job? Did you have a ADN or BSN? Shift worked? And what type of facility was it? Also if you don't mind disclosing what was your initial pay?
Thanks for the info.....:heartbeat
I graduated with an ASN in May 2008. Passed the NCLEX in July 2008. Massachusetts doesn't have graduate nurse status, so I started looking out-of-state before I could look in-state. I found my first job 10 months later, 250 miles away, as a Med and Charge Nurse in an ALF, for $20/hour. I worked 2:30-11pm.
ADN senior graduating in Dec, 2011, I have job lined up since my step mom is Director of Nursing. She stated my starting pay will be $25.50 per hr. I have a choice micu or general medsurg-oncology. My friends who recently graduated in May still have not fought jobs yet. It is a tough market. good luck. ADN programs are tough. Think of it as an Accelerated BSN program, well atleast my school is
One of my friend has specialised in mental health branch and now she is working with a psychologist in a private clinic. She also goes to patient at their home and is earning a healthy income. I also thought to do a specialization in mental health as general nursing doesn't have enough opportunities. I've been searching a job since a year but not getting anything. It's really very disappointing. I hope after doing a specialization , I could get something good. If anyone of you have any suggestion on this please do reply.
Graduated in June 2010 passed NCLEX July 2010.
Very first job with the title RN was for a flu shot clinic ($22), inside of local Walmarts.....very entertaining people watching:D
Then in 10/2010 was hired to do pediatric home health/shift work($22), not a good place for new grads and was only getting around 8-12 hours a week, so I was still working as a CNA/tech in an ED.
Then in January this year I was hired into a LTAC/SNF/LTC, ($24.25) they have a vent unit and skilled rehab wing along with LTC, I just gave them my 2 week notice last Thursday because I am going to go to another SNF ($25) within the same company, but with better hours, day shift 2 12s with 3 off roatating schedule so I can be available to work at my new job I was just hired for and really excited to do,
Pediatric long term care, ($26 + on-call differntial) a 58 bed facililty adjacent to the hospital for medically fragile children birth to 21, I am on call for now but praying I can work into a permante full or part time position:yeah:
1989, charge nurse on a telemetry floor. Pay back then was $12 hr!! Started the job 6 wks before I took state boards. I had to learn to read heart monitors real fast, as I was the only RN on a 44 bed floor! I had never worked in a hospital before, but luckily I had 2 older LPN's who helped me out. There was a nursing shortage at that time.
Graduated BSN in 1994 and first nursing job was on a skilled long term care unit with dementia, trach, tube feeding, stage 4 decubitus ulcers patients. After 2 weeks, I was charge nurse and responsible for supervision of the LPN, CNA, assignment, etc. I believe pay was $13.55/hr, learn a lot about time management, documentation, dealing with difficult staff and family members. I was there for a year, transfer to L/D when a position became available.
