my dad had surgery and he did it through charity care at the hospital because he doesn't have insurance and cannot afford it out of pocket. his doctor was aware of it. my dad got a bill from another surgeon that helped my doctor and it was around 3 grand. do I send him the copy of the charity care form? also, my dad is going up for his follow up checkup and i wanted to give his doctor something as a thank you since shes did it for free. what is something i can give her and her secretary?

Go to dollar store by nice pens, a gushy thank you card, write a heart felt thank you, a balloon or 2. Then u could by a fruit basket or individual fruit. Or some bagels and cream cheese, donuts. Call office to see when her office hours are and deliver explaining how much you appreciate what the doc and sect. Did.

I had no idea that doctors took cases on a non profit basis, not enough to fully restore my faith in health care, but its a start
I second the flowers idea with the heart felt note

Definately a heart felt note. I did that for a dr once and I happened to see him later on (we were done with follow-ups) and he told me how much it meant to him.

I gave my doc a book re old medical stories once. It was on sale at a large bookstore. He told me he took it home, & he & his wife had a lot of fun reading it.
The secretary always give flowers and/or chocolates & a card, I reckon.

However, there's something very powerful in it for them in the form of a major tax write-off for each charity case that they accept.

As healthcare professionals were are not able to accept gifts from patients or family members. It is just something we are held to.
However; if a family brings in cookies or cupcakes that they baked we don't ever turn those down. One family bought a thing of 50 cupcakes from a bakery for the nursing staff. If we would have not accepted, that would have been 50 cupcakes to waste!!!
If you insist, i would say just do a thank you card and maybe some flowers.

I truly mean what I'm saying here:
Whatever dollar amount you are thinking about spending on thank you gifts ... just ask that they apply it to the bill.

Write a note. No food, no flowers. Use the money you were going to spend on the gift and apply it to the other bill along with a copy of the charity paperwork.
