IV starts, Breast exams, baths, IM or sub-q injections?

Or worse..NG's or Foleys....***shudder***

Tell us in detail what skills you perfrom on each other!!!!!

Specializes in LDRP.

assessments and vital signs. we have dummies for a reason! im paying enough money to that nursing lab that i better not have to be stuck, too. we have arms with veins and blood, dummies with appropriate orfices for sticking tubes in, fake breasts with lumps of various sizes in them (not on teh dummies, this was a set of realistic plastic breasts not attached to anything), etc etc.

So far we've only done a few vitals on each other...bp, pulse, and rr...we didn't take each other's temp. We also will do IM's and will start IV's at the beginning of the summer semester. We practice bed baths and linen changes tomorrow but only with manequines (what's a sim man?) Once we get into injections and IV's then its totally a volunteer thing and you have to sign a waiver. We also don't practice NG tubes on each other...just the manequines.

physical assessments, and vitals...that's about it.

We have only done the boring stuff on each other VS and assesment...

Now where do I have to go for the bed bath and breast exam practice? :rotfl:

Have a great day, dave :)

Specializes in NICU.

VS, positioning/transferring in bed/chair, physical exams that could be done with shorts/t-shirt on, ID injections, and IVs if you volunteered. About as naked as we got was lifting our shirts far enough for heart, lung, abd and spine assessments, and even then, only in front of our instructor and partner, not the whole class. No breast exams, testicular exams, foleys, NGs, IM/SQs (we used chicken thighs), bed baths or anything else painful or involving nakedness.

Only Bp, temp and HR. Everything else is on the sim man. Lol ... all injection techniques will be taught on a "slab of meat" .... sounds awful funny to me!

FOLEYS?! LOL, can you imagine?! On second thought, no, please don't.

Specializes in M/S, OB, Ortho, ICU, Diabetes, QA/PI.

we did VS, bed baths (with shorts and t-shirts), physical assessment (minus breasts and genitals) and then for IV's, had to do 1 on the fake arm and then 3 (successful - no blown) on classmates before we were able to do them on patients

the creepiest thing for me was when I had to wear glasses smeared with Vaseline (to simulate poor vision) and a classmate had to feed me (and she was awful at it - I had experience from working in a nursing home - she had it way better than I did)

in Nurse Practitioner school, however, they paid people to come to class so we could do Paps and pelvics, breast exams, testicular exams but no prostate exams - I asked the people if it was a good job - they were getting paid $25/hr plus expenses - almost had my husband a second job :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Specializes in L&D/birthing center.

My school stopped letting students practice injections on each other a couple of years ago. We practiced ID on hotdogs and IM and SQ injections on chicken breasts and on manikins. We did IV starts on these pads that have "veins" filled w/ red water. Just out of curiousity...what exactly are you injecting into your classmates? NS right? There are plenty of folks in my class I wouldn't want coming at me w/ needles, lol!

Specializes in OB-Gyn/Primary Care/Ambulatory Leadership.

I know an NP who practically put her way through school by being a "pelvis for hire" for the med students. I think she got paid $25 per pelvic exam and $10 per breast exam. She said, unfortunately there was a limit on how many pelvic exams you could do in a day, or she would have "spread her legs until her rent was paid." :chuckle

Specializes in OB, lactation.

We did all the systems assessments except for gyn/prostate in lab on each other ... including breast exam but the group I was with faked like they already did it (we were in two groups behind curtains) before the instructor got to us. I don't know if the new class did it this year or not.

We didn't do bed baths and stuff like that in lab, we just did it in our LTC rotation.

OMG! She SAID that?

Hmmm...I'm broke. Where can I sign up? What would your resume say I wonder. Or cover letter. :chuckle
