Ok, so I know that nursing school is time consuming. I am assuming that much of what is so time consuming is home study. I am wondering what some of your nursing school schedule/home schedules are like. When do you go to school, when do you go to clinicals, when do you study? What year are you in, does it change by semester, is it RN or LVN school?
I have a couple of options for two community colleges to either side of my city. I am thinking of doing the LVN then RN program at the school I am at now for pre-reqs or just going straight RN at a CC I have also done pre-reqs. The LVN, then RN route would be summer through fall, with summer being four days (2clinical/lab and two lecture) and the rest of the year being three days (2 clinical/1 lecture) and a two hour lab day, then RN being three days for spring and fall. The other school would be straight RN, spring and fall semesters only, for four sem. It is three days first year and four days second I believe. I plan to apply to the first and then the second application period would shortly follow. I prefer the first only because I really would like to have the option to take a break if I really need it after the first year of school (I have five kids). I really hope to just go on through though. All my pre-reqs for both programs will be done before I apply to either. 4.0 so far, so I am hoping I won't have a problem getting into the first one.
Anyway, I know this is long but I am wondering with these two options how much time I would be studying in addition to school/clinical. How much time will it really require? I'm willing to do the work, just want to be prepared and have a good idea what I will be in for. What is your schedule like? How much time do study or do home work on top of that? Do you schedule your study time or do you fit it in whenever you can? Thanks for the replies.
starmickey03- I really like your schedule. It seems very reasonable.
It's really interesting the wide variation is schedules and really the overall time spent every week in these program. The one I am hoping to get into (the one I'm doing pre-reqs at) is a really good schedule during the year, but the summer will be four long days including the hour long drive. It really doesn't bother me personally but I don't really like the thought of my kids being at day care that long. At least it will only be for the summer.
I am in my Junior year of BSN program. I plan to study mostly on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday afternoon just a little bit to get information about my patient for clinical but not hardcore studying. I usually never study on the weekend (those are my days and I need to rest lol) unless I have a test on that Monday. Saturday is a day you will NEVER see me study on, it's my nursing sabbath day .
My schedule is:
Monday:
Nursing Lecture 8-1150am
Nursing Research 2-445pm
Tuesday:
Med Surg Clinical 7am-430pm first 7 weeks then Obstetrics 630am-4pm last 7 weeks
Wednesday:
SLEEP AND STUDY DAY...YEA FOR ME!!!
Thursday:
Nursing Sim Lab 9am-12pm
Friday:
Nursing Lecture 8-1150am
I finished Health Assessment, Patho, Pharm, Foundations last semester. We still continue learning Patho and Pharm with the nursing lectures though since you continue learning those throughout your nursing school and career and I LOVE those classes.
I'm just glad I don't go to school on Wednesday. Any free day helps with studying, doing care plans, writing papers, preparing outlines, and MOST IMPORTANTLY sleeping in until noon
i start my first semester of BSN on 24th August.
Monday - health assessment Lab (2hrs:50mins)
Tuesday - Clinical which starts on 09/28 (7am-4pm)
Wednesday - Nursing skills Lab (1hr:50mins) & Health Assessment (2hrs:40mins)
Thursday - Nursing skills lab (4hrs)
Friday - Foundation in Nursing Theory (3hrs) & Pharmacology (2hrs:50mins)

Yea, a lot of people are that way and a lot arent (lol obviously Im an aren't). But I dont mind my kids being at daycare full time it gives them the interaction that I think they need. I made the mistake of not putting my son in daycare when he was a baby and there werent any other kids around for him to interact with, so when he got around kids he didnt interact with them "appropriately", so to speak. So I vowed if I ever had any other kids I would put them in daycare so that they would know how to associate with other kids.
But my son would be there all day regardless because its preschool and my daughter is going to be there all day because thats what I've done with her for the last two semesters and it seems to have helped her, or at least I think so. I would just rather have my kids interacting with other kids rather than being at home sitting under me all day.
But you're absolutely right, plenty of people don't like their kids at day care. Thats been like the debate between working mothers and stay at home moms for years. Of course, it just depends on the individual, "to each his own".
Good luck trying to figure everything out!

I agree with you. I think day care is good for kids, provided it is a quality day care. My best friend acted like I was crazy for putting my kids in day care (I had no choice) and hers have never been. Now, her kids catch every illness coming and going. My kids are never sick. I think the exposure to the germs at day care helped build their immune systems.
I hope you didn't think I think there is anything wrong with your kids being in day care....I don't. I have five kids total, three in school and two that go to a parents day out type program two days a week for five hours each.
I never had the opportunity with my first to really do a PDO, so I did try to put him in preschool two days a week when he was almost three. It didn't work. I wished I had had the opportunity soon. We have no support here and he really never saw many other kids, only church. But he hid under the table nearly the whole time and so after three months, they asked me to pick him up. The older three started going to PDO about two years ago, by that time my oldest had already started pre-K. I am glad my two middle ones had the opportunity to go before they started school. They really needed the interaction and I really needed the break, as I had two new babies (one adopted, then 7 months later had one).
My baby, just started PDO about three months ago, at 15 months. She is the youngest child that I have been away from. She is so easy at home but I really thought she would enjoy that too and she does. She is the main one I am worried about being in day care for 4 days though. She will only be 2.5 at that time. That is still a year away though. Maybe by that time she won't seem so ity bity and it won't seem so bad to leave her for that long. My rough and tumble nearly three year old I think would be ready for it by then.

Oh no, I didnt think you were implying that at all. I was just stating my experience with why I like to have my kids in day care full time. It just works well for me that way and for them as well, thats all was trying to say...

My school does things a little differently.
We integrate some pre-reqs into the program, and we have 4 12 week quarters a year. We start clinicals in our 4th quarter(so Jan for me). But here is where we are at now(we have NO say in our schedule whatsoever, and this one sucks.)
Mon/Tues 1015-1225 Intro to Professional Nursing(i think im going to burn this book instead of selling it back)
1-3 Fundementals To Nursing Prac(skills lab)
315-420 Anatomy and Physiology 2
425-530 Computer Class(annoying)
Wed/Thurs just the Anatomy and COmputer classes.
With the drive, on Wed/Thurs i have NO time to do anything before I leave and I HATE finding childcare for 3 hours btwn the time I leave the time hubby gets home.
Hoping for a better schedule next quarer.
