What do you do right now?

I am curious, for those of you who are working and going to school....what is your current line of work? Also, why have you chosen nursing as a profession?

a friend of mine works at one of banners in sun city as an unit coordinator. she took a health unit coordinating course at Gateway CC. and got hired right away after she got certification. her sister was the same case. they had no experience or whatsoever.

so, i went to talk to the counselor at Gateway myself. he told me that even while you are at a hospital, doing your clinical as a part of the course program, they offer you a job because they've already gotten to know what kind of person you are. so some people get hired before they finish the courses.

my friend is working 3 days a week of 12hour-shift, while taking some pre-reqs at a comm. college. if she picks up an extra day, she gets $100 or200(i forgot)bonus just to show up.

the course is an one semester long, offered both at boswell and gateway. estimated prpgram cost is $1430 including books, DPS fingerprint card, and drug testing.

he also told me to start taking HCC130, HCC145, and any 1 credit BPC/CIS computer course(if you've taking some IT class before, you might not have to) while i wait to be accepted for fall.

If you don't mind me asking do you know what is the rate of pay they started out at?

hi julie,

I will ask her next week about the starting pay.

hi julie,

Awesome! Thanks

I have a B.A. in Communications and after the birth of my daughter I discovered my passion for caring for others. She is now 15 months and we then found out we are expecting again (it's a girl!) due in August.

Luckily with my degree, I have most of the prereq's out of the way and debating on what to do in the meantime. I believe I am going to wait a few years to start nursing school so my kiddo's will be older and more self sufficient.

Right now we do not have decent health insurance so I am planning on going to work part-time after the new baby is born in order to get us good health benefits.

Anyone love where they work that gives part time benefits?

I truly want to get my foot in the door with a hospital in order to gain experience before I start nursing school one day. Right now I am trying to decide whether to get my CNA, Patient Care Technician, Health Unit Coordinator, or maybe Phlebotomy certification.

Best of luck to everyone!

I have been working 2 full time jobs, going to school at UoP in Tucson LPN to BSN, finally quit them because I needed a break. Now I just work 2 full time jobs. I applaud everyone posting here who is working and going to school, as far as the SAHM; I will tell you what I tell my wife, I would not last a day doing your job, I am not worthy!:bowingpur

SInce I am fed up with school and I work far too much I have decided to go through Excelsior college to get my ADN. I figure it will work best for me.

What was it about UOP that didn't work out for you?

Basically I was stuck with a couple of learning team partners who did not pull their weight on the team projects. When I complained to the instructor I was basically told that there was nothing she could do. At that point I decided to drop their porgram. The reason I went to UoP was that I wanted to go to school with grown ups, it turns out that the kids at the CC are more mature and dedicated than some of the adults at Uop. I also take issue with the HESI testing, they are doing it because UoP had low NCLEX test results that were lower than both the state and national averages, now UoP makes it a requirement to pass most of their nursing classes. I do not think it was well thought out.

I have been at Rio only a few weeks, I was doin psy101 and Bio156. I dropped psy101 very quickly and i am doing so bad at bio156, so i want to change classes before i fail. I am thinking about taking HCC145or 130 because they are classes that will help me become a cna or do medical assisting which will give me a job while i do prereqs for nursing.

Online at rio is alot of essays whihc i hate, but with 3 children and being unable to afford childcare i have to do it online. So i just wanted to know what were these classes like. What classes are easy starter classes that will help me get started.

FT BSN student... Work at Target, but just got a job at Banner Desert as a Food service worker. Hope to transfer to the ED within a few mo's, as I recently got my EMT.

I did Dog grooming at Petsmart for 6 yrs. Recently quit because it was too stressful and bad for my back. I graduate anyway in December so it's no big deal. It has def. prepared me for tough labor work and stressful fast paced environments. I would not recommend that job for anyone though as much as you may love dogs. Agh, makes me stressed just thinking about it.

I do one of "those party businesses" and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it but it's more of a hobby that I plan on keeping forever.:D Once I get my CNA (I start July 12 YAY) then I'll work as a CNA all through NS. I also have a husband and 3 children at home. By the time I'm done with NS my youngest will be getting ready for kindergarten so the timing will be perfect for me.:yeah:
