What is "KVO" on your unit?

Here (antepartum) it's 30cc/hr.

A M/S friend of mine said hers is 50cc/hr.

At our hospital the policy is if KVO is ordered to HL and flush q8h. As a matter of fact, the docs must be trained well, because the majority order HL when tolerating PO.

I worked at one place where it was 10ml/hr peripheral and 20 central. Where I work now we have updated (well actually written) a policy for 42ml/hr non CHFers, 20 for CHFers, and 5ml for peds.

It varies based on the unit, so I always find myself asking what is KVO for this unit. I've seen it from 25-50 ml/hr on most units where I work.

On my step-down unit it's generally 10cc but 20cc through central lines

I work pediatrics and it's typically been between 10 and 20 cc/hour for pedi patients

And therein lies a huge problem. KVO means different rates to different people. Either you need an IV running or NOT!

"KVO" should never be ordered. The exact rate in ml/hr should be always.

I do peds and we run it from 2cc/hr to 20 depending on the size of the child.. obviously a 17 year old isn't gonna get the 2 and a 2 day old isn't gonna get the 20 .. that their maitinence fluid sometimes lolol Nurses also choose... we place the IV we know how big the vein is and what it will need

I think ordering "KVO" is OK only if the hospital/facility has a policy that sets the rate for KVO. At my institution it's 42cc/hr. Strange number I know...

I work in pediatrics and our KVO can be as little as 5cc/hr via an infusion pump.
