What is the Phillipine 'secret'?

Published

No stats but it seems the Philippines graduate MANY registered nurses who save lives and prevent suffering around the world.

One theory is that the opportunity is available for people to attend nursing school, mostly BSN programs.

One nurse can bring an entire family out of poverty.

Strong family loyalty prompts RNs working overseas to send money home.

They are doing something right that benefits us in my city and many others.

Perhaps we can learn more.

Did you earn your nursing degree in the Philippines?

Can you give us some insight?

I think the whole situation is sad all the way around.

It is indeed a very sad situation that a "profession" such as hours has to import nurses. It depletes that country of good nurses, as well as doesn't adress the problems we are having here.

Of course the question is, how is it they have a glut of nurses to export? Or is that a myth?

It has been my expereince that male nurses from the Philippines are much less assertive then even the female nurses. After acclimation, the males kick as$ and take names more than the females. Just my expereince.

The ignorance of NurseHardee nevers ceases to amaze me. I am a white American male who also happens to be a graduate of a Philippine Nursing School. I attended it while I was stationed there instead of partying all the time. The society there as a whole does benefit from it exporting its workers around the world. Workers are a valuble commodity in todays market. Countries around the world gain value by the money that is returned to the home society and in the increased standard of living by the money sent home. The governments even encourage it.

One person graduating form nursing or PT or OT school can support an entire family and take a load off the government there in the cost of their social programs while the host country gets a needed worker to fill the void that is present. The people benefit by the gaining of experience from some place different. The greatest social changes generally come from outside sources not internal ones.

I am even married to one of those Filipina nurses and we have two wonderful children. We have invested money back there in property and businesses. We are helping their society by doing that. We have created jobs and security for several families.

As for them not being assertive...LOL... god how I wish that were true. I would have a quieter familyl ife that would be for sure. My wife's employers know better than to cross her...LOL I could have told them that.

So it is not sad nor is it a shame that importing of nurses is being done. It is a great thing and all gain by it, Society as well as the individiual.

Ok, after reading this post I think I need to say somehting.

Barbpick mentiond that male Filipino nurses are what? less assestive?

I DONT THINK SO! I manned a big CVICU and I put everyone where they are suppposed to be including all the doctors. I make known what is need to be heard. And I make sure something is done.

And surprise, who is the less assertive ones? Hmmm, I wonder...

Hey Dave:

Hurray! I think you are right!

Yes that is exactly what I said. In the 80's 90's I did many orientation classes for new nurses, it was my expereince that males kept quiet and when they felt comfortable they kicked as$ and took names now does that mean ran units, I think so, cover the house as a supervisor, uh huh. So where is your big problem with my expereince?????

It was my expereince.

Damn...the sky must be falling. Spacenurse and I finally agree on something:roll

I have read elsewhere that the reason there are so many Filipino nurses coming here is that they are over-producing nurses for the express purpose of them coming here to get good jobs and send money home. Being an RN in the US is a much better opportunity than most people have in the Phillipines, and they have set up many nursing schools to train nurses to US standards. So, we are not taking nurses that they need there (as is the case in recruitment of nurses from lots of other countries); they have set up a system to intentionally produce nurses for the US market ...

I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing; I can't really decide how I feel about it. I can see many sides of this issue.

One of the local hospitals just hired 15 Filipino nurses because of the new California ratio law. I'm sure other California hospitals are doing the same.

That must be true, because so many of them do come over here, ready to pass NCLEX. When I think about it, it's quite obvious that their program is geared to NCLEX.

The question being why can't we set up programs to create nurses for the express purpose of easing the US nursing shortage. sigh...

That is a BIG important question!

That may be a common misconception. There was a news article posted here a while back that quoted Phillipine officials as saying their country is being depleted of nurses, it cant keep up with the demand (not just from the US but from the West), and it is experiencing its own "brain drain" and shortage. A search here might be able to pull that article up again.
