What do patients say that irks you?

Published

"They are going to have to take the baby"

I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.

I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY! :uhoh3:

and my favorite of all time ...

"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless

Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes

I am not an OB nurse, but here is something that is said that "gets my goat:"

EPIDERMAL instead of EPIDURAL...

Can I have Sierra Mist and a tray!

too funny hahaha111 love it111

Everyone know how hard we work as OB /l&d/PP and nursery nurses. I really don"t like when my motherr in labor or the the father ask "Do you think you could check my mother in laws blood pressure?" or the visitor or one of the many 8-10 visitors ask "Coudl you give ME two tylenol?" oh please :(

"Nipple Confusion"!!!!!!! When explaining to mom and dad that their 9-1/2 pound baby desperately needs a bottle for a low sugar!!

It's not something I've heard frequently but recently a 19yo patient says to her boyfriend after a SVD, "You just made my p*$$! hurt!" :nono: OMG, who talks like that? Especially in a room full of people who are virtually strangers.

I'm just a student in my preceptorship right now (on L&D) but I have a couple, if you don't mind me sharing:

- "Look that time her contraction got up to 65!!!!" With external monitoring and after explaining numerous times that it does not measure the intensity of the contractions.

- "Is this taking so long because my daughter has Medicaid, so you don't want to c-section her because they won't pay for it?" My jaw dropped! I didn't even know what to say. I guess I should have said "I don't know or care what her insurance is. It is taking so long because labor is unpredictable and there is no reason to perform a major abdominal surgery at this time"

- "Oh, why can't you stay at work until the baby is born?" Ummm, because you are 2 cm dilated and I have to be back here at 7am...

It is amazing how many things already irk me... do you think that is a bad sign?

In general, what really irks me is when a patient calls the Home Health Aide,"the nurse" and then the aide doesn't corrct them. Hello! You want to be called a "nurse" you can go through the schooling and all other bullcrap that came with the program, lol. Oh and it also irks me when I called "the lady" or "sweety" by the patients and their family members.

When I worked nights:

Call light goes off, I go to room:

"I don't mean to wake you up but...."

Do you REALLY think I was SLEEPING??????

I am a student in my OB clinicals, last week the nurse i was working with asked the patient if there was anything we could get her, she said no thanks. Her husband chimmed in with I could really use a beer right now( mind you its 7am) as he proceeded to drag out his video game system and then complained that we dont provide food or drinks for the dads anymore. HUH?????? I thought you were here because your wife was having a baby, not because you wanted to drink and play video games. he then proceeded to complain because her contractions were getting stronger and he needed to finish this level.....

Eeow, Does that happen often? I would have to jump off the table and slap him, or if I was the nurse, a knee to the groin would be in order. That is so obnoxious.
