"They are going to have to take the baby"
I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.
I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY!
and my favorite of all time ...
"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless
Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes
According to, um, someone i knew, it may be able to fit over a fist, but sometimes it pinches and causes a tourniquet-like effect. Still not an excuse to skip on wearing one, but i can't imagine the averaged-sized one being comfortable for everyone, though.
That is why they made Magnums! For someone I, ahem, knew...
I was watching A Baby Story on TLC one day and the mother was in labor and the dad was on the cell phone talking to his parents and updating them on her progress.
Apparently the baby had a BM while mom was pushing and the dad said (and I quote) (he was also sort of whispering this, as if embarrassed to say it out loud)
"Well, the Dr's are a little concerned because the baby went to the restroom while "Cindy" was still pushing."
I about pee'd my pants! Awwww, new dads!
Patient: "Nurse!!!! Nurse!!!!! I need my pain medicine"
Me: "I'm not a nurse, but I can tell the nurse you want something for pain"
Patient: "Yes you are a nurse!!!"
Me: "I'm a Nursing Assistant. I can't by law give you mediciation. What i can do is tell the nurse that is in charge of me that you want pain medication."
Patient: "You're a nurse....i don't understand why you can't give me my medicine now!!! You people are all the same"
:angryfire :angryfire sometimes i wish i had a tape recorder so i wouldn't have to repeat myself so much.

do these ppl think they are being original?
Did it ever occur to him that maybe his member is too small?
Guess not.
One of my top gripes that families of patients DO is when they bring food for themselves into the labor suite prior to delivery knowing that the patient is unable to eat!
I HATE that!!!! :angryfire Mom's laying in bed, trying to enjoy the clear liquids she's allowed to have and in comes the entire clan with KFC, Wendy's, etc. I've started telling moms and families upon arrival that most moms get really nauseous during labor, and no matter how much she talks about food the smell of it will most likely make her vomit. That's cut way back on the buffet bringers, amazing though that some people still think "that doesn't apply to me"

Had a "heavy hitter" on my floor, who had a plethora of problems (on my floor, rare are the patients who don't have ventilators, aren't in isolation (for various bugs -why isn't it ever just ONE? ) and aren't diabetic.. ) and her family would 'sneak' (as if you couldn't tell as soon as you walked into the room, or emptied the garbage, or washed 'em -they would get food stuck in the folds of skin, etc) anything from pizza to candybars. (gee, and they wonder why their insulin doses are so high, or why the number seems to yo-yo )
It really gets under my skin -if you want to help them die, do it at HOME, and don't waste my time -I'd rather care for someone who wants to actually get better!
Right on z's playa!! But I think I have one of the best. I am from the south and the way people ask for things really trip me out. My favorite is "you can't get me no water!! What tha? Do you really think that is going to make me run out the room to get it for you. Wow!! It feels good to vent. Thanks for the opportunity!!

geez....glad i didnt run into you when i was in school. no wonder most nursing students have zero confidence. :uhoh21:
i havent had much experience on an OB floor (just as a student...but im no tsure if i should share my experiences there seeing as i wasnt a "real" nurse)...but on my floor we routinely get families who somehow believe that their mother/father/sister/brother/uncle/aunt/grandmother/grandfather is our only patient. yes, my other patient is in the process of crashing, but i'll go get you some ice water pronto.
