What do patients say that irks you?

Published

"They are going to have to take the baby"

I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.

I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY! :uhoh3:

and my favorite of all time ...

"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless

Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes

Hey everyone!

They are "taking my baby tomorrow"..... :chuckle Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Anyway, my c/s is tomorrow at 7:30 am. I am excited, scared, joyful, and sooo tired. It's been a long haul.....I had a stillborn at 37 weeks on 7/31 of last year and this pregnancy was off by only 3 DAYS from last year..making the gestational age of my 2 babies almost exactly the same at time of delivery. The amnio results for lung maturity came out great and this baby has been thriving.

Sorry, I know I am babbling and this is off-subject but I am hyper and sleep deprived. Thanks for bearing with me. :)

Things that bug me...

"I want my epidermal" (grrrr.....can you at least try and pronounce it right?)

"How long until the baby comes?" (lemme get out my crystal ball....) Actually, if I have built up a good rappor, I will use the line "well, I didn't bring my crystal ball to work today, so I can't tell you for sure." They usually crack up laughing. Usually.

"Why does it hurt so much?" (well, there *is* a reason why it's called labor...)

Baby has never left mom's chest immediately after birth, and everyone is asking "how much does the baby weigh?"

One thing that bugs me a lot - the cell phones constantly ringing while mom is pushing/delivering. EVERYONE has one - mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. It's so distracting for some of these moms to push while the phones are ringing constantly. I've had more than one mom yell at her support partner(s) to shut the darn phones off. I realize family and friends are excited and anxious for the birth announcement, but really! You weren't there for the conception, why do you need to constantly call them at the delivery????

I am sure I can think of more, but I'm on vacation. :balloons:

Considering what it is and where it's coming out, i can't for the life of me think why it would hurt either. :stone

This does not have to do with OB directly but in california we are now required to take a pain assesment as part of the regular intake along with blood pressure, temp, pulse ect. When people come in for a head ache and it is clear that is is not that bad,( no sun glasses, smiling, stolling in on their own, no nausea) and I ask them what their pain level is on a scale of one to ten, one being harldly and pain at all and ten being the worst pain they have ever experienced, ever, and these people say ten. I know this is partly in attempts to get their stadol and demerrol inj, but come on, I am always thing to myself. Ten? You must have not had a baby without pain medication before :chuckle

Hence the reason why something could possibly be the worst pain someone's ever had, until something else comes along to change that.

Maybe that's why i was treated like a drug seeker last month when i had the migraine from Hades (i.e. THEE worst pain i'd ever had, so far). I should have worn sunglasses, had a friend carry me, and waited till i vomited before i came in......

Instead i was curled up in a chair with my head between my knees, crying, and willing to try anything to stop the pain, drug or not.

I'll remember my sunglasses next time. Maybe then someone will believe me when i hurt.

Hi, new to this forum ,new to any forums for that matter! I work in an ER and currently 6 mos. into my 1st year of nursing school. I laughed because over the weekend we had some down time (imagine that) and discussed the latest "stupid sayings". and shortly after our Doc asked a pt. (experiencing chest pain) if she ever felt like this before, her response was "well one time my electic lights were off". The physician calmly replied "how off were your electric lights"? I had to leave the room :rotfl:

Again, people and their *$%^@ cell phones! I just want to rip their phones away and lecture them on their manners.

Cell phones are prohibited on our floors, and they get a "welcome to the unit" paper, which THEY SIGN, understanding this. If they persist in using them, they are asked to leave the unit.
