"They are going to have to take the baby"
I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.
I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY!
and my favorite of all time ...
"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless
Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes
How about spending 11 plus hours with a woman helping her through her labour, walking up and down halls, in and out of the shower, rocking, hold her legs for 2 hours and encouraging her pushing efforts for the doc to walk in and bearly make the delivery. Who gets all the thanks? The doc of course. The nurse gets to go home tired and sore but happy herself with a job well done.
Oh-I love that one! Women love to tell about how they were in labor for 10,000 hours, and how the doc saved the day, but forgets to mention who was there the 9,999 hours before delivery! I was so careful to thank my L&D nurses! Especially since my nurse was always my boss!
AMEN!!!! We call it TOBP......tired of being pregnant!
But---isn't there such a thing as "large for dates?" Like, say with a baby of a mom with gestational diabetes, that may just keep getting bigger? Or just that she wasn't sure about LMP or time of conception and the dates were off (although I guess the availability of ultrasound can accurately predict estimated fetal weight, etc...---or can it?)
Are you saying there really isn't any reason why a woman might be induced early? Even, say, with pregnancy induced hypertension or an active outbreak of lady partsl herpes? Or would they still try to get her scheduled for the C-section as close to her due date as possible?

No she is'n sayign that there arent reasons for induction. However the vast majority of inductions are TOBP or dTOBC (doctor tired of being called).
I get this one a lot too, I am very young looking and short too. I am 23 years old, brand new RN, problem is I look like Im about 16. Especially those nights when I'm too tired to put makeup on before work. God, I'm so sick of oh you are such a cute little thing (mostly from little old ladies) Or my you are so young. Oh well i'll appreciate it when i'm 35 and look like i'm 25 (i hope)
Yes, you will - I don't have a "no she didn't" story but I'll tell you this: I'm 32 and was carded in a restaurant the other day by a 23 year old who got smart with me when he walked up to the table. I ordered a margarita, and he had the NERVE to say, "Well, I know you're younger than me, so I need to see that ID!" I asked him how old he was - he told me 23 - and as I pulled my DL out I told him he needed to go be fitted for bifocals.
What sucks about looking young is being talked down to by clerks in stores who look at you like you're fielding Daddy's Amex instead of your own. That REALLY annoys me.

No doubt. I ordered a coffee a year or two ago while out with my Grandmother, the waitress actually asked my Gram. if it was ok to let me order it. I was like what I am 26 years old, needless to say she appologized. Then the other day I went to a local convenience store for some late night cravings. A lady there had the nerve to ask me what a little girl like me was doing pregnant. When I told her my age she actually called some other women from the store to come and look at me. Geesh!

You'll feel better when you're older. I love when pt's think I am a "Young woman" I am 42, and thanks to my mom and gran's genes(great skin), look younger. I got carded once last year, and five of my classmates on separate occasions were shocked to meet my 6'1, 16 yo old son-they all thought that I was their age, 22-24. Wow! something good I can blame on my mom, for once. Now, to do something about those new and sneaky gray hairs.....
Back when I was going through the Paramedics program (years and years before I decided to chuck that and be an RN -and as a side note, I did not choose the 'bridge' program. I went through the entire program. If I'm going to be a nurse, I'm going to be a nurse the RIGHT way. No skipping. ) we had to spend time in the OR (just like we did in the RN program) and I watched a 17 yr old girl have a c-section. Her first words were 'where is my mom'. Not HOW is the baby? or is it a boy or girl (guess she could have already known that) or even WHERE is the baby?. Ok, maybe I'm being harsh, and yes she was a young girl having a baby, but that memory always left me feeling kind of cold.

I was 24 and married when I had my first baby--college graduate, out on my own for 5 years,etc--but when those labor pains started you better bet I wanted my Mom there. Momness is a powerful thing. I see it in my children. Even in my pets! They want ME when they aren't feeling right--not their playmates.

No, not accurately. A late trimester US can be off by a pound or more. Which is some of these "large for dates" babies induced early come out 6 or 7 lbs.
While there are medical indications for some inductions; uncontrolled GD, pre eclampsia, post dates, etc, more and more inductions are done for convenience.

I totally understand. I am almost 18 years old and now a senior in highschool and I still get, "What grade are you in? Sixth?" My response "No, I am a senior in high school" They usually just walk away. You see I am 4'11" VERY short for an 18 year old.
