I'm interested in management and leadership or nurse practitioner. I am currently in an ADN program. What path would be easier to get a job with without much experience. I've never worked as an lpn either.

Of course it's possible ....but it's a lot tougher in some markets than it is in others.

I think it would be hard to get a job in nursing leadership without experience. Why not do a few years as a staff nurse and get a leadership certificate as you work? If you have no experience who would hire you?

Speaking as somebody promoted to shift lead before I thought I was ready, you do not want to put yourself in that situation. The stress was unbearable and I started smoking. And that's not even on the same level as a unit manager. Do yourself a favor and get some experience.

I agree with everyone else. I have been working in the same ED for about 3 years now and still would not feel prepared to be a charge nurse in the unit (nor do I want the responsibility), much less a unit manager in charge of the difficult decisions. I'm also concerned about nurses that want to go straight through nurse practitioner training with no/minimal bedside experience. I know the nurse practitioner is a different animal than the bedside nurse, but personally, one that has no experience making the occasional critical split second decision? Nope, don't really want them taking care of me.

Do you think if I worked a few years as a nurse after getting my masters I wound then be able to get hired in a higher position?

You don't know me, so don't try to start bashing me for asking questions, which I believe is what this site is for. I never said I making "shortcuts" was my goal. I'm sorry you have the impression I'm lazy or something.

I'll try to answer before the thread derails and its shut down by the mods. Look at Shane's advice above your post, he's right on. The problem is that you still don't know what you don't know. Best of luck.

Good grief. Who's bashing you? Please reference the post that is bashing you.

You asked for advice. You got it.

I'm going to start one soon. What do you think about an RN-BSN-FNP program?

Yes! and No! The right answer will come from what you do to facilitate your own success.

Is there a reason you don't want to simply work as a nurse and gain valuable experience? Wanting to go straight into management or an APN program does seem like a shortcut to me, one that leaves out the part where you actually function as a nurse.

You're right to be worried. The vast majority of candidates will have experience, putting you at a big disadvantage. Is there a reason that, as a nursing student, you like nursing enough to want to advance your education but not enough to actually be a nurse?
