Aug 27, 201312 yr What are the advantages of a sugar substitute? In other words, what is the advantage of not having that amount of sugar in one's diet? What are the disadvantages of sugar substitutes? Are there any documented health risks of such substitutes (this is one area where a lot of non-reputable sources will weigh in with their own propaganda)? Are there any risks to cutting out sugar from one's diet? Can the sugar substitutes interact with other nutrients or with medications?
Aug 30, 201312 yr As a lifelong TaB addict (yes, they still make it) I'm firmly of the opinion that the claims against sugar substitues and artifical sweetners are exaggerated. However, I would never say they're a "healthy componet" of anyone's diet. Healthier than sugar-filled regular pop, maybe.
Aug 30, 201312 yr I had this same concern re: the health risk of sugar substitutes. I researched for a bit and bottom line is too much of anything can be bad for you. Moderation is the key. I myself use sugar substitute in my water w/ lemon, coffee and tea. I have been trying to "cut back" on the number of packs that I use per day. Both my parents were diabetes and I myself run the risk as well. Just doing what little bit I can to minimize the risk.
Aug 30, 201312 yr I drink a lot of Coke Zero which contains Aspartame instead of sugar. Typically 3 cans of the stuff a day. I did a lot of research and the only side effect I've heard of is a craving for sweet things. However, if you drink coke zero the last thing you want is something sweet. Maybe if you get the flavored waters...
