that makes them so godawful stupid?

I swear, it must be a requirement to exchange your brain for a spot in the program. I just spent a very long morning in orientation (hello? I'm a SENIOR student) where students (seniors like me) asked all kinds of stupid questions that we already know the answers to.

And why do I have to come in for orientation so the instructor can read us the syllabus? Are we all suddenly illiterate? And a seminar on time management? I could scream!

Its just totally ridiculous. They could do all this the first day of class and save a bunch of time and a 100 mile drive for me (50 miles to the central campus each way).

"What do you think is the best way to study?"

"Should we read the material before or after the lecture?"

"Will we have a tutor again?"

On and on and on....

I left after lunch.

Sorry, needed to vent.

I almost dropped out of school between those peers and some of the "teachers" at my good old community college. THings are still up in the air right now..I'm apprehensive about being a nurse now and downright terrified of being a patient!!

Exactly...if I make it through this I guarantee you i'll set a record for getting fired for "differences" hehe. Hopefully I'll be in some tent hospital in the amazon before too long.

Ha! My goal is to get on at the Children's Hospital in the city and be far far away from these idiots (all taking jobs at the local hospital, no doubt).

Its frightening how little they know but more than that... how little they think, or how little they WANT to know. I mean, I don't know everything. I feel like I have everything to learn still... but at least I have a basic awareness that there are things I need to know in order to provide safe nursing care and be responsible for the patients in my care.

These people? Forget about it. I wonder how many people they'll kill. There's one girl in particular... I shudder at the thought.

One day in chem i shouted across the room "Hey you! Yeah, the dumb one! What's your major??" It wasn't nursing THANK GOD. My friend just told me to take a peak in the student nursing center last week. They have the pic of the class from last year and half of them have their caps on upside down!!

People who make it a point to not know will plague you for the rest of your life. Too bad we have to go to school with them too *sigh*.

I had that yesterday, but didn't find it as bad as yours was! It was a NEW student orientation though. We got to watch videos -- one on pt confidentiality and one on basic hand washing etc.

They didn't go over the syllabus, they did go into some of the program (the entire program, not the semester) requirements.

They went over the things required by the hospitals to work in them, and had us sign forms stating we had read their orientation materials. Two separate hospitals they work with, with two separate packets and patient confidentiality forms.

I also wondered why they didn't do this in lecture / clinicals. I guess a few people actually got dropped from the program for NOT coming to the mandatory meeting though. So was this our first test? Seeing if we would show up? LOL...

Best part was that the 3rd semester students held a nice luncheon for us and we got to pump them for tips on the program and how the tests are written :-)

Hi MsPurp,

The only thing worse that your description of Orientation and "Time Management" Seminar is having to do it but instead of one day it lasts a whole semester!!

When I was in college the first time around I HAD to take a 2 credit class called "Be A Master Student". It was awful. Time Management, how to study, really lame stuff that even an 18 year old freshmen knows.

I think I blocked the whole experience out of my memory.

Tower of learning?

Oh and the other thing that irked me is that they said students who work over 20 hours a week are considered 'high risk'. As in high risk for flunking out....

I calmly said... if I work less than 20 hours a week I'm at high risk for 'foreclosure'.

Nursing school may be the center of YOUR universe but its not mine.

I just don't understand why it can't be like any other academic discipline instead of coddling everyone and encouraging them to be codependent and unimaginative.

Does 'natural selection' mean anything to these people?

Oh Rebecca... I really like you.... you can come work with me anyday...

I beleive the nursing schools are good at producing these herds as you call them. Herds that wait for their cues, do what they're told, etc. These are not the kinds of nurses I want working beside me. We should be weeding them out. I want someone with an imagination, initiative, common sense, and self motivation working with me.
