What is the nicest thing a patient has ever said to you?

How about a happy thread? What are some nice things patients have said?

The three nicest I have heard are:

"Every time you walk in, you're like a ray of sunshine." (I choose to think she meant my personality, and not my neon green scrubs!

"You were born to do this"

And, lastly, after I had told a man I had had for 3 days staright that the next day was my off day,

"If I pay you, will you come be my nurse, just for me?"

What are some of your good ones?

"You look like Sandra Bullock"

The most memorable thing was the simple "Thank you" I got from the parents of a 2-yr-old that I disimpacted. He'd had a fecal bolus stuck at the sphincter for over an hour and he was in pain.....they were so grateful the mom hugged me and kept saying "Thank you" in Spanish over and over.

The most recent: I had a home health client with end-stage Parkinson's, not doing well. The wife was overwhelmed: not only did she care for him, but she worries about everything. After one visit with her husband I sat her down and asked her if she believed in turning things over to God. She said Yes.

"Then why are you fighting with Him for control? You can't do a single thing about this other stuff right now, so let God worry about it and you worry about your husband."

The next day the caregivers' supervisor told me she had made a visit after I'd left, and the wife kept telling her how much I had helped her by talking with her.

In a LTC, a husband whose wife I had helped, came up and said, "you are the only nurse who ever listens to us (the residents)".

"Bout broke my heart, all she had was impacted wax in her ear, but her complaints of ear pain were ignored.

95 male patient (one of my first patients as an HHA) and his 89 wife thanked me for giving him a bed bath. She was caring for him but needed help after she recently had hip surgery or something like that. It was my first bed bath EVER, and he was such a joy. You could see in his face that he was grateful to someone have take the burden off of his recovering wife. My heart broke when I found out 3 days later that he died, collapsed on his front lawn, heading to the doctor's office. I will never forget him.

This was the weirdest and most wonderful coincident of my LIFE and I will never forget it: This was when I worked telemetry, and I floated to a unit that I rarely floated to, it was just about at the end of my shift and the call light goes on to a patient that wasn't mine, and everyone was busy, so I go in to see what is needed. This cute LOL (little old lady) asks if I could help her to the bathroom, but that she tends to dribble and she is sooooo embarrassed!! I tell her that it is NOOO big deal and I will help her and get her all cleaned up etc. Well on the way to the bathroom, she says, thank you for being so nice to me, I am from a small town and it is hard to be in the hospital in the big city! I tell her I am from a small town too! And guess what!! We are both from the same small town and her sons know my brothers and her two sons are long time, life long friends with two of my brothers. Well, of course I know of her, but had never met her. You have no idea the kind of joy it brought both of us!!! She knew of me as well, and said, I always wondered what happened to you.

Well I got her back to bed and she was all cleaned up and we were both in tears and I hugged her and said goodbye! The nice part was when both of my brothers called me and told me that the patient said that she had met an angel and I had turned around her recovery for her!! She honestly believed that I had saved her life and so did her sons!!! Can you believe that?? It was pure chance that we even connected....well, of course, I believe it was meant to be...and our meeting made a huge difference for both of us!!

If God ever gave me a gift, it's getting the plugs out of trachs.

I had an older gentleman come into the VA hospital in the middle of the night and he could hardly breathe at all. A few people had worked on him with no luck. I got my trusty kit out and went to work on him.

Another gentleman, a really big black guy with a bible in his hand who happened to be waiting on a 4 am ride to transfer to another hospital, came and put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Bless you both" as he was leaving.

About 30 seconds later I weaseled that nasty plug out and the poor guy took the first real breath he'd had all day. He immediately called his brother in and told him, "This nurse is really special. Nobody could help me until the angel came in and put his blessing on her. She was touched by the angel!"

The next day he told everybody in the whole hospital I had been touched by an angel and chosen by God as a "special nurse". Even years later pulmonary patients would come in the VA and ask for the special nurse :lol2:

This wasn't a patient because he never knew how difficult his discharge was. His daughter came to see me and told me that I had saved her daddy's life by tackling the care givers and getting him out of the situation he was in. Long complicated story bit caregivers are about to go to jail for abuse and exploitation of the elderly. All I did was my job. But all is well now and he loves where he is.

I get called an angel all the time. IF ONLY they really knew me bless them LOL

1. A family whose father was diagnosed with an occluded SVC, IVC and abdominal aorta (massive, undiagnosed tumour) thanked me profusely for the care and support I gave them in the time after their father's diagnosis and death.

2. Another woman told me I was a gentle soul and a wonderful nurse.

3. This one is kind of back-handed but I know it was totally genuine: I was running around like a mad thing, and this lovely confused gentleman told me, "It's amazing, a girl your size and you run the legs off the rest of them!". :lol2: I am no small lass, and I thought that was hilarious and lovely.
