What would make you say "I could never do that"

Published

When I used to tell people that I worked in the NICU, their faces would light up because they thought I sat around and held babies all day.

Now that I'm back in the PICU, when I tell people what I do, I get these horrified looks and people(nurses too) will say "I could never do that!". Whats even better is when they say it's because they like kids too much!

So my question to my fellow nurses is ..... what could you never do?

I'll start.... I have a great admiration for Burn nurses! I admit that I do not know much about burn care because it has always been a fear of mine, but I have always thought you have to have a very special talent for this area!

OB--Dealing with hormonal women all day does not appeal to me lol, I prefer intubated and sedated adults. I also could never do peds because I couldn't deal with the families and personally if I have to start an IV I dont want it to be a huge event with the screaming and kicking (even though adults do this too sometimes lol). So I'll pass on both of those areas thank you. Personally now I dont think I would ever want to do anything besides ICU.

I'd have to say Peds, it takes a special nurse to handle the kids, the families, etc. I just am not that nurse.....

No sick babies, no prisoners, and no psych patients. I prefer my old folks!

Specializes in Med/Surg.

I could never ever work with seriously ill children such as those with cancer and organ failures. I could not watch a child die like that.

I can handle a lot of gore and repulsive situation however, I could not handle going within 6 inches of a broken protruding bone outside of the skin...I guess ER is out of the question for me ;)

I'm with you that's where I draw the line. I can handle organs hanging out but don't even show me an xray of a limb and all the metal used for repair.

Specializes in Pediatrics.
I have no interest in (or patience for) sick adults, especially the whiny, entitled ones.

:yeahthat:

Me too! Give me an infant or kid any day! I am peds all the way.

pedi, you have to deal with families who are so amprehensive, and children looking up at you with such trustful eyes

Specializes in OB.

Adults. I'm beginning to find it harder and harder to work in ER because of the endless whining, complaining, me,me,me attitudes of so many adults. Give me Paediatrics any old day. Paediatric ER would be fantastic.

Specializes in Emergency Room.

med/surg and nursing homes.

LTC where I might be the only RN on the floor!
