What have you lived through? (Let's reminisce)

Published

I'm a 30-something, and havent experienced much more than the general membership here, I'm sure, but I get the most amazing "stop and think about this for a second...." moments when I consider how much our world has changed over the lives of us all.

For me - I've lived without a cell phone. I was in high school when people who had pagers were considered to be drug dealers. I grew up with Oregon Trail in my teens. Most people didn't have computers at home. The mountain I lived on didn't have cable TV, so we had only 3 channels. Our roads weren't paved, and Saturday afternoons were spent jumping into the river swinging off vines. Call waiting and caller ID were a really big deal, but we didn't get them because they cost more money.

My grandma tells me they didn't have wheelchairs. She was a nurse in her white cap and skirt and tights. She had an alcoholic, abusive husband at a time when that was shameful to even mention. My grandpa tells me no one on his street had a TV. It was a really big deal when someone got one, and everyone whispered about it.

My 90-something patient told me about how so much of healthcare took place at home because you really, really had to be messed up for mom to go get the horses and carriage ready to go to the doctor. She got in big trouble once when she broke her arm falling from a tree.

What have you lived through? What pieces of history stay with you?

The Who, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Rush, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Motley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Lita Ford, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Heart, U2, Billy Joel. Elton John, Tom Petty, The Ramones, Guns n Roses, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton...omg. Can't remember the rest.

Wow....we are musical soul mates! So envious that you saw Stevie Ray! I remember crying when U2 played "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "One"....can't help it, sometimes music just does that to me.

I love this thread!

Oh, I'm getting old! You guys mention all those performers. I grew up with street corner doo wop. The REAL oldies but goodies of the '50's, early '60's.

I have tickets to see Frankie Valli in April! (second time for me) Timeless, classic music.

Oh, Crystal Pepsi...I loved the stuff! Remember Life Savers "Holes" candy? I was a big fan of both Sweet Valley High & Sweet Valley Twins, in fact I have recently been looking for those books in local used bookstores, just for fun and nostalgia! I think my daughter will enjoy them in a few years. At some point in the late 80's, I sent off for an "I Love Sweet Valley" kit that included a poster & stationary. My favorite character was Lila!

We saw them at the Garden and Bono's dad had just died and he sang Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own and took his sunglasses off because he said they always annoyed his dad. I got chills. I saw them 5 times. The Who 8. Metallica 10 plus.

I was a little metal head. Still am, kinda.

Ahhh, stationary! Remember pen pals and writing letters?

My husband is more of the Judas Priest/Iron Maiden fan, they are a little too heavy for me...but I would love to see Stevie Ray Vaughn and Def Leppard! I was so impressed when Def Leppard took time off waiting for their injured drummer to get back to performing instead of just replacing him.

I remember as a little girl when our (rotary) home phone was cut off for six months because my brother had spent several weeks late night calling a girl who lived in the next town. The phone bill was over $600. Ma Bell (AT&T) raped Americans for millions of bogus long distance charges for decades... before their monopoly was finally broken up.

My grandpa was forced into retirement from the monopoly breakup. He was fairly young at the time and drove my grandmother so nuts, she made him get another job.

Three channels only, on a black and white TV with rabbit ears.

Dial up telephone, and a "party line."

Everyone watched it on TV all day when the Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong stepped out.

No more cartoons on Saturday or after school because Watergate was on, instead.

Playing outside barefoot all day in the summer, drinking out of a garden hose.

Our '64 T-Bird with the freezing cold AC. Nobody wore a seat-belt.

Everyone smoked, including pregnant women.

Meat and potatoes meals were considered healthy.

Long-distance phone bills in the hundreds of dollars.

Ahhh, stationary! Remember pen pals and writing letters?

Yes!

I had pen-pals in Australia, England, Scotland, and the exotic, far away place of New Jersey. :)
