What Job Did You Work While Getting Through Nursing School?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am currently applying to jobs before I start clinicals (Jan 2017)(RN).

Here are my options

  • Fast Food(KFC/Pizza Hut)
  • Retail Worker(Walmart)

I'm 21 & still living with mom who insisted I stay until I graduate and become a licensed RN. The only bills I have is cellphone/car note & half of the electricity/gas bill.

I would like to know what jobs you worked while attending nursing school.

P.S. I am attending school in Louisiana and I believe this state allows RN students to, after the first semester, apply/register for CNA license and, after the second semester, challenge the LPN exam.

If this was your experience I would also love to read it. :)

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I worked 16-hour weekend double shifts every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00am to 10:00pm as an LVN while attending an associate degree nursing program.

This employment setup worked wonderfully for me. I compressed my 32-hour work weeks into two long days, which enabled me to have Monday through Friday off to focus on school. Also, the $47k I earned that year was not too shabby.

I initially worked in the lab when I started school. Then a few months in I started working at the hospital my program was associated with. Unfortunately it was a heck of drive and really bad pay. I did that for a few months and then got a better paying tech job closer to home. I have tossed up the idea of switching floors but tell myself it's better to show the consistency. Plus they have me the schedule I want. By the time I graduated I will have been there close to 1.5 years.

I worked as a tech in the ICU. It was not a huge unit, so I floated to just about every speciality. Med/Surg, Step down respiratory, Mother Baby, ED. Highly recommend getting something in a hospital setting. The students that worked as tech's in this particular hospital were ALL offered RN positions upon graduation. Plus the experience really made a bunch of us stand out in clinical.

CNA to pay for LPN school and LPN to pay for RN school

Fast food / Walmart is chump change. I worked as a bartender/ banquet waitress on the weekends... took home $100 bucks a night.. tax free. Thinking of going back to it ;)

Specializes in Vascular Access.

I spent about 10 years working as a purchasing agent for the AF and then for a local community hospital. It was a great gig while I went to school. Luckily my boss was flexible with my schedule concerning clinical hours.

Specializes in ED, School Nurse.

I worked as a CNA- I got my certification before I started nursing school. I had to finish a few pre-reqs (which took 1 school year) before I could get accepted into the nursing program, so it didn't make sense for me to wait until after my first semester to be eligible to become a CNA. I worked per diem on a physical rehab floor, and I also worked 1-2 nights a week as a hostess/server at a restaurant.

Specializes in Psychiatric RN & Retired Psychiatric CNA.

I've heard!! My school friend works there and says she only has to work two-three days out of the week to suffice. I'm thinking about joining :)
