11/28 What I've learned: My son will rule the world (through science)

Published

So, it's been a lame few weeks. By lame, I mean really crappy. I am thankful for our guest OPs! You've helped keep the party going! Thank you [emoji5]️

Some stuff I've learned.....

I just walked in on my ten year old taking notes on radioactive and stable isotopes. This kid. OMG.

DNP will cost me $60k. And by all the anecdotal banter around these threads lately, it seems my program will be a bit better than many.

My kids are excited to see me more when I go back to school. Problem is... If I don't find enough aid, I'll still have to work. (I do want to work maybe a day a week.)

Apparently my forte is critical thinking. My crutch is apparently time management.

The words "I can't even" have not come out of this mouth more than they have these recent weeks. For real. I can't even.

If you haven't worked at a hospital where the CEO and all senior management are nurses, do it.

I could not get back on night shift fast enough.

Receptionists need to be taught that "stable" is not the same as "not a problem". Or, maybe just hand the phone to a nurse with common sense.

Our med/surg floor sees no problem with keeping discharged patients' names on their census to maintain staffing. IN FACT, they have no qualms with short staffing another floor to do it, and they'll give the pulled nurse a full patient load and the rest as few as literally two patients.

Good performance ratings = bigger bonus

I know I'm the last person on the planet to think this through, but I was reading a summary of HCAHPS and I realized the MOST important thing that SHOULD be measured wasn't on there at all. The ONE thing that would make all the rest really not matter. What's that one thing? OUTCOMES! Holy stethoscope but why?!

I hope your week has been awesome! What have you learned?

This week I learned that the proper planning and follow through of last week allowed me to actually enjoy my short holiday break this week. I spent the weekend geocaching with my 9 year old and had a blast!

Now that I've started back on school related things I have learned that I have to find a way to pay a large chunk of tuition, books and testing fees.

I won't qualify for a private loan and can't afford to use the payment plan offered by my school. I've applied for scholarships but am waiting to hear back.

I may just bury my head in the sand and hope for the best.

I have heard this lament from so many of my coworkers when I was employed. Many wanted to further their educations by obtaining a graduate degree and found that the costs were prohibitive. Another former coworker had been a LPN, advanced to becoming a RN, and wished to obtain her BSN. She was over 50 at the time and the hospital was of no help with tuition reimbursement. No other nation saddles their students with burdensome debt. This nation can well afford to have an educated populace, but they do not seem to be so inclined.

Love to all of you, I promise, but I have to be "that guy" and request we get back on topic. [emoji173]️

What would AN member That Guy say about you impersonating him?

Back on topic:

I've learned just how crazy things can get when a patient needs both a cardiology procedure and a surgical procedure. Too sick for both, so watching the cardiologist and the surgeon battle over who would get to do their part today and who has to wait until next week can be... entertaining.

Isn't That Guy related to Alpha Male?

I just learned about reporting via APS.

This week I have learned:

*Even though I was dreading my 4 hour stint at my PRN job, (ob put me off 12's HALLELUJAH) it turned out to be a good shift. Even if the diabetic whose glucose was 375 kept wanting snacks. Then at shift change told the on-coming nurse I was being mean. She told him she would give him a diet sprite to which he responded "Well h***, at least that one has been giving me regular." Little did he know, he had been getting diet the whole time.

*Decoration my office for the kiddos at my full time job is super super fun. Though it may be contributing to their frequent visits, which is why I always incorporate health facts into the new theme. Wish I could post pics of all of my boards, though it would take away from the anonymity.

*My principal surprisingly supported me when I asked her to speak to the staff about repeatedly sending major nosebleeds to my office with NO tissues. "Blood spatter down every hallway is a huge infection control issue" must have done the trick. I also learned that she apparently likes to be notified before anyone sends an email?? This after I sent one out about me having to be notified of a field trip. Oops.

*The toilet paper roll in the bathroom in my office only gives one ply at a time, which can bring out Hulk-like rage in this preggo. Not only that, but it squeaks. So if a kiddo uses it I hear "squeak, squeak, squeak" about a million times. GAH!

**I love, love, love this time of year. Love.

I also learned that she apparently likes to be notified before anyone sends an email?? This after I sent one out about me having to be notified of a field trip. Oops.

As the only medical authority in our district, I wouldn't notify a principal about my own emails to staff about medical issues.

I did have one principal who liked to try to tell me what to do. That's frustrating.

As to the toilet paper, are there in rolls stored somewhere? You could just place a roll all by itself in the bathroom or . . . maybe just bring in your own. I love those wet wipes for the bathroom. Hide them from the kids though!!:)

Control is her issue, even if she has no idea what she is talking about (medically). And I might start stashing a roll of tp in the drawer, good idea!

We have totally had this sex coloring book discussion in another thread. I just don't remember which one.

It never fails to amaze me how many people are actively killing themselves every day with their noncompliance. I mean, I've always known it was bad - but I feel like the patients who were dying of COPD/HF used to at least be 60 or so. We have several patients in their 40s with end stage heart failure, end stage COPD, etc. on my unit right now. I'm like my god! The end stage stuff is supposed to be for people who are at LEAST middle aged!

It's just ridiculous. I just don't know how people can let themselves die of a lifestyle-induced illness before their 50th birthdays. That's just way too young. :(

Take a deep breath and then say to yourself "People have the right to make decisions about their health status. Even bad ones".

Doesn't really make it any less frustrating, but it might help the feeling that your head is going to lift off your neck and spin around while steam shoots out your ears.

Must be the clone of my frustrating (former) colleague . . . the bad thing is, she is heavily involved along with her very cool husband in the sports in our area; along with my own husband. So, I still see her a lot.

I've learned that kids and klonopin is no bueno.

While we are bellyaching about Christmas, can I just say I am not exciting over the upcoming Elf on the Shelf photos that soon will be taking over all my social media outlets?

I can barely remember to move that darn thing so I saw a note on fb that said something to the effect, "I caught Lyme Disease from Dasher (more like from the ticks on Dasher) and I am not feeling well so the rest of the season I'll be watching you from _______ spot. Be good." I almost used it!!
