What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?

Published

I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.

I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???

Thanks for your input!

My school included a cheap learning stethoscope in our materials fees for every student. If your school does the same I would save up and get a good quality one instead. Its something you will be using everyday throughout your career. And gee, it really makes a difference ! Everything sounds so much clearer and its so much easier to hear things.

Well, I have a verrry long lost of things to get after reading this thread! I went to Wal-Mart and the storage clipboards that have a calculator on the top now run around $12:down:...I might just make do with a regular clipboard and a calculator I already own.

My school requires us to have an Interwrite PRF clicker. Has anybody on here ever used one? I think it is similar to a Smartpen. Anyway, the cost from the school is $50, but I got mine used for 15 bucks:)

i'm starting an lpn program in october. right now i'm on unemployment so i don't have much money to spare. i'm looking to buy supplies little by little rather than go nuts right before school starts. i know my school provides my textbooks and equipment (stethoscope, bandage scissors, etc) but i was wondering what i might need for myself. what type of notebook, pens, pencils, highlighters, do i need markers? also, some people have recommended i buy a recorder for lectures. is this really necessary? i'd also like to know what type of shoes are best for clinicals. my feet are sensitive and kill me after just a few hours. any suggestions would be great! :nurse:

I bought a refurbished recorder on bestbuy.com for $10.99 :) Looks brand new too!! Most of the ones that I priced new were anywhere from $75.00 and up! Hope that helps!

I don't think I have ever had time to listen to a lecture. I think paying attention in class and taking good notes is a lot better, plus if you don't understand it there is always your book, google, or here to take care of mind boggling stuff! The only thing I used a lot was food and montain dew, the rest is rest and you can adapt to what you have!

bought a digital recorder for $60 a year ago...

i recorded lectures but soon found out that listening back was not my cuppa tea

concentrating well in class and taking my own good notes worked well for me

I have a supply question that may seem a bit strange but I wanted to ask it anyway. I have a small generalized calculator for doing quick easy calculations, it even came on a lanyard so I can always find it. However, I am going into College Algebra next term and was wondering if any of you that has taken it knew if you needed a special calculator for it? I remember in high school we had to have a scientific calculator and I know that it might depend on my school, but those are a little pricey and so if I am going to need one I need to start saving now. (and yes I know that everyone is going to laugh that I call a calculator pricey when most people are dropping $50 to $300 fro a stethoscope and $1,000 on books, but I don't have that kind of money to spend so everything I buy has to be planned a head of the game. The curse of the single unemployed mother attending school.) Thank for any information you can give me. Like I said I understand that you cannot say what type my school will want, but I just want to know if it is something I need to plan to purchase.

Not quite sure if you will need a scientific calculator, but i'd say to plan as though you'd need one. Start saving so that when class starts if your professor says you will have to get one you will already have the money to go buy it and if you don't need you'll have money to contribute to something else. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

You can generally get scientific calculators for $10-20, if you weren't already aware. I got one at WalMart for $12.

i record them on my itouch and listen to them on the long ride to and from school.. but i am more of an aural learner, so it may not be best for everyone.

Ashley,

How big are the files on your itouch? Like how many MB/GB is an hour lecture?

I bought a voice recorder from BJ's Wholesale, which is a discount club like Sam's Club and Costco, it was only $30. I have found some on Amazon for about the same, but I did not want to pay shipping and handling. For me my learning style is some of all of them. I learn best by tying all three together, hearing the lectures, taking notes, and studying or reading. I have to have all three to learn. So I want to record my lectures, that way in class I can just listen to the lecture and then take notes from it later. My voice recorder plugs into my computer so that I can store my classes on my computer and review them all before midterms or finals. It really helps me to go back over my notes while listening to the instructor again. I guess my advise is that if you want to buy one then buy one, but if you don't think you will really benefit from having the recorded lectures, than don't buy one. Start your classes and see how it goes.
