I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
Courage
The ability to admit my mistakes/accept constructive criticsm.
Brains (some)
Determination
A good pair of shoes, a clipboard, stethescope, a small scissors, black pens, a small notebook that fits in the pocket, possibly a bp cuff, possibly highlighters. Some students have those roll up measuring tapes, but my work has paper disposable ones that I like, as well as round ones with circumfrence measurements.

Roller bag, for the heavy load of books. Wait until your clinicals to make some horrible error in lifting and really hurt your back. A lot flexibility, the no defensiveness, the ability to take constructive criticism, and a lot of time to read..when there is no time and you are falling asleep in the shower....Needless to say, those things weren't on my school supply list... From to student to student..You learn about the "stuff" you need as you go along..everyone likes different supply items.
Now that I am in my last semester, , I want to update my list:
Take every day as it arrives and learn what you can that day. This is a journey that does not end, it just looks different all the time. I cannot wait for my first REAL job so that I can plant myself somewhere and to really get to know how to be a nurse someday.
A patient gave me the best advice on what to "bring" to clinicals...he said bring your "cool". He said whatever happens, don't let them see you lose your cool. That's the best advice I've ever had and it really works. I don't know what to say but if they never see you lose your cool then they trust you and they feel better about the care and their recovery is much faster if they trust their nurses...student or not.
some of the things i have become very attached to:
1. black clicky pens!
2. urbane scrubs-they are so soft AFTER you wash them!
3. clipboard w/ storage for clinical days
4. my litman stethoscope!!!
5. calendar on my smartphone
6. sturdy backpack
7. anytype of computer
8. great friends in NS that are going through the same struggles w/ school as you are
9. chapstick and hand lotion
10. COMFY SHOES!!!!
11. as many NCLEX review books you can get your hands on.
12. smile no matter what!!!
Hope this helps!!
Rolling backpack, a good bag for your clinical stuff, VERY comfortable shoes, 4-color pens, notecards, NCLEX sample test question books... don't bother with a super expensive steth off the starting block. I have a Prestige Sprauge and it works just fine for what I need it for. Lots of paper, lots of folders, some gift cards for yourself for gasoline, coffee, etc because you never know when it might come in handy. Hand lotion. Penlight. Bandage scissors. I have lots of gadgets but none are completely necessary.
