What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?

Published

I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.

I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???

Thanks for your input!

A lot of supply stores like Lamberts now sell gel cushion earpieces that fit any stethoscope.

http://www.magazines.com also carries several nursing magazines and there discounts off cover prices are impressive!

Thanks for the Magazine suggestions! I looked on Amazon & they carry them, so it is on my list of things 2 get b4 school!

Hello All

I am looking for a good solution for my need(want). I am needing a recorder that is rechargable so I can listen to my notes to and from school. I have read that a PDA is great to have and so I really want one. I am leaning away from an IPOD but it is not totally out. think about it and let me know, thanks Dusty

Hello everyone,

I just got accepted into an Accelerated BSN program at Union University at a second degree student. I'm so excited and can't wait till I start, the whole application process was extremely draining. I'm writing to ask what things I should do to get myself mental and emotionally ready?

If you get too many things, then you just have TOO MANY...keep it simple, and organized. Lots of pencils/eraser/sharpener for tests, HIGHTLIGHTERS, Clicky pens in red, black, blue, spiral notebooks, pocket binders, thick 3-rings, hole punch to store handouts. (1 or 2 for each subject, you'll need to replenish in a month or so) Loose leaf is a hassle. My school supplied a good stethoscope, bp cuff, and everything else, but i went to allheart.com to get goods shoes (on sale) and the pocket organizer to hold all my scissors, and pens, and (2) pen flashlights. Try it out, good site. Dont' worry about how others study, or organize. But if the idea seems good for you, then do it. Sometimes, more is just that, MORE STUFF to carry! Keep positive!! Oh, and you'll need a calculator but a small one should do fine.

HA HA HA!!!!!! OH MY GOSH IS THAT TRUE, i'm sure i can find an extra pocket for a remote...:typing

I tried them on and I love them! I looked at the professional style, as we need to wear all white, closed heel for school, but... they were so comfy compared to anything else I tried on. I've found them online @ 15% off of the store prices around here, and ... think I'll splurge a bit when I get my financial aid checks. Anyone know of any others comparable to dansko in comfort that might be a little less than $100?

Thanks!

Don't hate me, but I got a pair of Dansko's in like-new condition from a resale shop for 4 dollars. :) I see deals like that on eBay alot. They run in European sizes, but run pretty true to size (you know, if you use a Eur ---> Amer conversion chart). Good luck!

I purchased a pair of dansko's on Ebay for 60.00 bucks (professional clogs). They were in PERFECT condition. If you have the time and/or inclination, Ebay and amazon are good outlets to look for things you'll need for nursing school.

I also got a littmann classic II S.E. for 55 dollars (new, in the box) from Ebay. I figure I'm going to be out enough money with books, I may as well save where I can.

Good Luck!

HI

I am starting an entry-level MSN-FNP program at the end of August! I am so overjoyed!

All the suggestions in this thread have been wonderful!

I have been thinking about a voice recorder for recording lectures. I never used one in all the prerequisites I took, but I know nursing school is harder.

To people who use them:

How often do you actually go back and listen to the recorded lecture?

To people who don't use them:

Do lectures move so fast that notetaking can't keep up?

Advise please:)

a good pair of shoe liners, padded ones. and a little notebook to slip inside your uniform pocket. i'd be lot without mine! anything i don't know or find i need to look into a write down. but lots of blank pens too, you'll go through that many that you'll swear you're eating them!

wow..just read through all 52 pages! Excellent information! So much that I copy/pasted onto my word and will use it to make my own list! Just a few more weeks and I will begin Norwalk CC ( Connecticut)2year program..my nerves are shot right now!!! trying to relax and enjoy the summer with my 4 kids before all heck breaks lose..the advice about cleaning and organizing is a great idea, esp for those of us who also have to allow time for kids! I plan on making a master list of everything that needs to get done in the house and see to it that the kids and hubby work off my list..its beyond just helping out, Nursing School will keep me busy and if everyone pitches in, then my downtime can be spent with family and not playing catch up with the house !!!!! Good luck to all!!!

I am big on the voice recorder. I cannot write fast enough so what I do is take my notes while recording the class. I then go home and listen to the voice recorded lecture and add into my notes what I missed during class. After that is all done I then rewrite my notes. The voice recorder is a must in my opinion. Oh, make sure you buy the digital voice recorder and not the one that uses tapes. You will also be able to upload your recorded lecture on to your computer with a digital recorder.
